The Greater Newburyport region is rich in history — from Clipper Ships, like the Flying Cloud, that were built on the banks of the Merrimac River to the many, magnificent historical properties found throughout the region. You don’t have to look or travel too far to see some of the past in Greater Newburyport today.
Another piece of Newburyport that is steeped in history is the Oak Hill Cemetery. Consecrated in 1842, Oak Hill Cemetery, has deep connections to Newburyport’s historical past and contains the grave sites of many Newburyport notables including authors, newspaper editors, librarians, and benefactors.
If you want to explore some of Newburyport’s past and learn about some of the more interesting and unique characters that lived here, take a historic tour of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport, MA this November with Ghlee E. Woodworth.
Ms. Woodworth is offering four, free flashlight tours of the historic Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport on the following evenings:
- Friday, November 14th at 7:00 pm
- Sunday, November 16th at 6:00 pm;
- Saturday, November 22nd at 6:00 pm
- Sunday, November 23rd at 6:00 pm
Her father, the late Todd C. Woodworth, local funeral director and historian, began “Tiptoe through the Tombstone” cemetery tours in 1988. Over the years he entertained participants with tales of the sea captains, former Newburyport mayors, photographers, authors and poets, and a Hollywood actress who are buried here.
