STAR PARTY! Discover what’s in “The Sky Tonight!”

Join the Salisbury Beach State Reservation Park educator and members of the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Clubto find out which celestial bodies may be seen in the sky over Salisbury Beach on Saturday evening, September 4th.

Several Club members and their telescopes will be available to assist your viewing both with the naked eye and through telescopes. You’ll also learn about the moon, its phases and its effect on the tides, as well as how various cultures have historically related to the objects visible in the night sky.

All ages are welcome but children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Where To Meet:
Meet at the Jetty Parking Lot (#3) by the Handicap Parking Spaces near the Merrimack River.

The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament  is celebrating its eighth year on Labor Day weekend, September 4th – 6th. It is the only tournament that combines the North Shore’s fishing heritage with the fight against hunger in local communities.

The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass tournament is the only tournament of its kind dedicated to the fishermen and women of Boston’s North Shore. This charity tournament is held over Labor Day weekend with proceeds directed to fighting hunger in our community. It is named in memory of its founder, Leo Almeida, a lifelong resident of the North Shore who created the tournament to bring together his love of fishing and his commitment to the community.

This tournament is about a lot of things, but most of all, it is about fishing and fun. Boston’s North Shore is home to some of the best striper fishing on the East Coast. The waters of Essex County, Massachusetts stretch from Lynn and Nahant all the way to the New Hampshire border. Are you a surfcaster in Marblehead? Maybe you fish from a boat somewhere off Cape Ann? Or is Plum Island your favorite place to cast? However you fish, wherever you fish – this tournament is for you!

There are both adult and youth divisions and categories for fishing from boat or shore/surf. Cash grand prizes are awarded in each category. Continuing a tradition begun in 2007 with the fifth annual tournament, the tournament record setting fish will earn the angler who caught it an extra $100 bonus.
The tournament also includes a raffle, so even if you don’t land “the big one,” you still have a chance to win a great prize, donated by generous local merchants.

Entry fee is $15. Tickets are available in Salisbury at Bridge Road Bait and Tackle and Tim’s Bait Shop; and in Newbury at Surfland Bait and Tackle.

When you enter the Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament, you get more than the chance to win big from a weekend of good fishing, you also get the good feeling that comes with knowing that you are playing a part to help those who are most needy in our community.

In the Tournament’s first seven years, over $30,000 has been raised for North Shore food pantries. This year, tournament proceeds benefit three North Shore food pantries – Danvers People to People Pantry, Gloucester’s Cape Ann Pantry, and Our Neighbors Table in Amesbury.

Beatlejuice, the local and well known Beatles Tribute band, will be performing at the Surfside Live Beachfront Stage at Salisbury Beach on Saturday, September 4th from 7:30 to 10:00 pm.

The number of Beatles Tribute bands is probably countless, but in New England, at least, none come more highly praised, critiqued or recommended than Beatlejuice. The band has taken on a history of its own and features some of this area’s finest musicians whose talent and showmanship go far beyond the norm in tribute bands.

Recreating not only the early hits with uncanny accuracy, Beatlejuice also performs the heavily orchestrated masterpieces such as Strawberry Fields and I Am The Walrus.

The free performance is followed by a fireworks display over the ocean at 10:00 pm and is one of the summer events presented by the Surfside Live Concert and Fireworks Series at Salisbury Beach.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

These very popular programs provide an excellent opportunity to explore one of the most productive birding areas in the country. To date, over 310 species of birds on these Wednesday field trips.

During this spring and summer, field trips explore birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus is on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County. When appropriate, we will adjust our itinerary to search for rarities reported in the area.

This program is ideal for birders of all skill levels. Preregistration is not necessary. Four-trip special: $36 members, $45 nonmembers. Trips need not be consecutive for special price.

With summer winding down, the weekly Wednesday night fireworks show at Hampton Beach is also coming to an end. You can catch the last Wednesday night fireworks display of the 2010 Summer Season on September 1st.

The 15 minute show will start at the top of C Street on the beach at 9:30 pm.

The Friends of Newburyport Hockey will be hosting their 7th Annual Clipper Cup Golf Tournamentto help raise money for Newburyport hockey programs at Evergreen Valley Golf Course, Newburyport on Saturday, September 18th.

All proceeds will be going to the high school hockey program and to assist in the development of Newburyport Youth Hockey program and its players.

Fee:

The cost is $100 per player. The tournament is a four-player, team-scramble format.  The cost includes 18 holes, cart, all food and beverages.

The lunch and raffle will be held at the Elks Pavilion on Low Street following the 18 hole golf tournament,

Interested in being a volunteer at Joppa Flats Education Centerin Newburyport?

Do you love the outdoors and sharing nature with children? Become an education volunteer at Joppa Flats! Throughout the school year, Joppa Flats staff and volunteers offer a wide range of coastal ecology and birding programs for children on-site at Joppa Flats, at schools, and in various wild habitats.

To prepare these volunteers for assisting with these quality programs, the Joppa Flats Education Center provides complete in-the-field training. You’ll learn a wide variety of hands-on activities and experiments pertaining to levels of questioning, learning modalities, and using objects in nature to practice science.

Join the Center’s crew of trained naturalists and help Mass Audubon with its mission to increase awareness and inspire stewardship of the natural world.

Training Sessions:

• Tuesday, August 31st: Tide Pooling at Sandy Point
• Tuesday, September 7th: A Visit to the Bird Banding Station and Maritime Forest
• Tuesday, September 14th: Salt Marsh and Sandy Beach
• Tuesday, September 21st: Rainy Day Training

No experience necessary. After completing the training and performing three full shifts as an education volunteer for Joppa Flats, you will receive a full refund of your registration fees.

Training themes may switch dates in the case of inclement weather.
