You can catch the movie premier of Last Hope, a collection of 16 original short films, all inspired by the Sea, on Sunday, October 4th at the Ashworth By The Sea Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH.

The premier, which starts at 7:00 pm, features the works of the following filmmakers:

Albert Falzon
Jon Frank
Monty Webber
Patrick Trefz
Michele Lockwood
Richard Kenvin
Andrew Kidman.

The premiere will feature a LIVE Score by Andrew Kidman & The Brown Birds from Windy Hill (all the Way from DOWN UNDER!)

Winter Surfers Embrace The Cold With New Wave of Wetsuits

If you’re an absolutely, avid surfer and you live in New England or anywhere else along the Northeast coast of the United States, then you’re a special breed of surfer and you’re probably out on the water on your board year round!

If you’re not a surfer and can’t believe that anyone would be out there on the cold and frigid waters in winter, take a drive by the surfing beaches along the New Hampshire seacoast, Salisbury Beach and Cape Ann on a winter weekend day. You’ll see surfing action out there on the waves.

The best surfing in our waters often occurs in the winter as the result of strong, winter storms passing through the region. On the plus side of the cold of winter, winter surfing means no crowds, lots of room on the water and plenty of parking. On a nice sunny Saturday or Sunday morning take a drive along the coast, you’ll see a pretty good contingent of dedicated winter surfers on our beaches.

Advances in Wetsuits Make Winter Surfing More Feasible – A Heated Wetsuit

An online article by Nick Roth on the DelMarva Now website, describes the winter surfing scene in the Rehoboth Beach area of Delaware. The article also describes the innovations and advances in wetsuit technology that have made winter surfing more palatable for a growing number of surfers.

For approximately $1,000 to $1,100 dollars, you can surf in comfort all winter with the Rip Curl H-Bomb wetsuit, a comfortable, flexible wetsuit that is heated by two lithium ion battery packs, which allow heat to travel throughout the suit at different settings. This is not your father’s old wetsuit!

If you don’t want to break the bank acquiring the heated Rip Curl H-Bomb wetsuit, you can acquire a more traditional 5 five-millimeter thick winter wet suit for about $300. These new wetsuits offer sufficient thermal protection and are far more flexible and durable than older wetsuits.

Stand Up Paddle Surfing Starting To Make More Waves

First there was surfing. Then there was windsurfing. Now there is a another spin off of traditional surfing called Stand-Up Paddleboarding or SUP.

Once again this new trend is moving from the west coast to the east coast. Though paddleboarding has been around for a long time in Hawaii, it’s only during the past few years that it’s made its way to California.

The main difference between traditional surfing and stand-up paddleboarding is that the stand-up surfer on the paddeleboard is on a longer, wider, fatter board, which he or she stands on and uses a long paddle to move through the water.

While looking slightly awkward, the paddleboarders can still catch waves like a longboard. One of the selling points of stand-up paddleboarding is that during days of bad waves, paddleboarders can still go out to get some exercise while the regular surfers are sitting on the beach.

Even on the west coast where trends and fads are adopted faster than you can change a pair of shoes, stand-up paddleboarding has been slow to catch on with traditional west coast surfers.

It’s only a matter of time, however, before we start seeing stand-up paddleboarders at the beaches and in the coastal waters of Greater Newburyport, Cape Ann, New Hampshire and southern Maine.

Surfing Cape Ann to Southern Maine

While many of us may not associate surfing with New England, the sport of surfing in New England has been steadily increasing in popularity.

There is a growing and dedicated base of local surfers in the Greater Newburyport region with easy access to surf shops and beaches ranging from Cape Ann and Nahant to our south to the beaches of southern Maine to our north.

Evidence of a surfing niche can be found in Newburyport if you are observant. You will notice more cars than you realize with surfboards on their roof racks driving through downtown and on High Street. If you want a surfing magazine, you can find one at Fowle’s on State Street.

You can surf and/or watch local surfers at the beaches of Plum Island and Salisbury and Seabrook. Good Harbor Beach on Cape Ann is a good beach for surfing. Nahant Beach in Lynn/Nahant also attracts many surfers.

New Hampshire’s North Beach, just north of Hampton Beach, is a very popular year round surfing beach, even during winter weekends. If you go a little further north to southern Maine, you can access some great surfing beaches in York, Ogunquit, Wells and Kennebunk.
