Newburyport High School Hockey Team Sails Into North Division Two Championship Game, To Play Peabody On Friday, March 5th At Salem State College

March 4, 2010

Newburyport High School HockeyWhen: Friday, March 5th, 7:00 pm
Where: Rockett Arena, Salem State College, Salem, MA

Who would have thought at the beginning of this year’s high school hockey season that the Newburyport Clippers would be making a  repeat appearance in the North Division 2 Eastern Mass Championship game? After last year’s wildly successful season that culminated in the first state Division Two Championship for a Newburyport High School hockey team, most of us probably wouldn’t have bet the house that the Newburyport Clippers would be there again this year.

The loss of several seniors from the team last year and perhaps an emotional let down from having won the championship last year could have been difficult factors to overcome, but the Clippers were up to the challenge and are now one win away from repeating as the Eastern Mass North Division 2 champions. They really turned it on the second half of the season and played some excellent hockey against some really good hockey teams.

This year Newburyport rode under the radar of many high school hockey followers as the undefeated and top seated Wilmington Wildcats deservedly garnered much of the  publicity while completing an undefeated regular season. Newburyport’s 3-1 victory over the Wilmington Wildcats in Monday’s Semifinal game at the Chelmsford Forum wasn’t a shock to followers of Cape Ann hockey faithful as the Clipper’s had played Wilmington very well in their last regular season battle, a game Newburyport lost, 3-1, even though they had dominated play throughout most of the game.

Newburyport High School Hockey Team Skates Into Semi-Finals, To Face Undefeated Wilmington Team On Monday, March 1st At Chelmsford Forum

March 1, 2010

Newburyport High School HockeyWhen: Monday, March 1st, 8:00 pm
Where: Chelmsford Forum, 2 Brick Kiln Road, North Billerica, MA

After beating Tewksbury, 6-2, in the 2010 MIAA Boys Ice Hockey North Division 2 Tournament Quarter-Finals game, the Newburyport Clippers (16-4-2) move on to the Semi-Finals to play their biggest game of their year against a familiar foe, the undefeated Wilmington Wildcats (21-0-1).

These two Cape Ann League foes have played each other twice during the regular season, with Wilmington winning both contests. Newburyport gave Wilmington all it could handle in their last meeting, and had a wide advantage in shots on goal and time in the offensive zone, but still came out short on the scoreboard losing to Wilmington, 3-1.

The Newburyport team got better and played much more consistently as the season progressed. They looked strong wrapping up the season in the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank Annual Ice Hockey Tournament and haved looked solid so far in their two games played in the state Division Two North tournament.

Newburyport High School Hockey Team To Face Tewksbury In Quarter Finals, Friday, February 26th

February 25, 2010

Newburyport High School HockeyWhen: Friday, February 26th, 5:00 pm
Where: Stoneham Arena, Montvale Ave., Stoneham, MA

Ayfter demolishing Methuen, 7-1, in their opening round game of the 2010 MIAA Boys Ice Hockey North Division 2 Tournament, the Newburyport Clippers (15-4-2) will have their hands full when they face off against the Tewksbury Redmen (14-5-2) in Friday’s quarter final game at Stoneham Arena (5:00 pm start).

Both teams are evenly matched with similar records. Newburyport is the Number 4 seed in the North Division 2 bracket and Tewksbury is the Number 5 seed. Tewksbury also had a srtong performance in their opening round game as they dismantled the Beverly Panthers, 8-2.

Newburyport will have to come out and play a flawless and solid game to keep on their march for their second, consecutive North Division 2 Championship. The winner of this game will move on to the Semi-Finals.

Newburyport is in a tough bracket. If they move on to the Semi-Finals it doesn’t get any easier as they may be facing Wilmington (20-0-1) for a chance to move on to the Finals. No way around it for the Clippers, they will have to earn it the hard way this year by playing some of the best teams in their division that are in their bracket.

The 5:00 pm game will be broadcast live on WNBP-1450 on the radio and via digital streaming from the WNBP-1450 website.

Good luck, Clippers!
