Pentucket Girls Basketball Wins Division 3 North Title for Second Year In A Row

March 9, 2008

Congratulations to the Pentucket Regional High School girls basketball team on their 51-43 victory over Winthrop yesterday at Tsongas Arena, Lowell.  This is the second year in a row that the Pentucket Sachems won the girls Division Three North Championship.

This year Pentucket (21-2) was the Number 2 seed in the tournament and they jumped out to a fast start and were able to build a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Winthrop Vikings gave it a run and closed the gap down to two points, but foul trouble hurt Winthrop chances in the fourth quarter and the Sachems were able to once again build up their lead.

Next on the agenda for the Pentucket Sachems is a visit to TD Banknorth Garden in Boston on tuesday, March 11th to play Archbishop Williams in the Division 3 State Championship game.

Good luck, Sachems!

Newburyport High School Boys and Girls Basketball Teams Knocked Out of Tournament

March 1, 2008

The extra day in this year’s Leap Year didn’t help out the Newburyport High School’s boys and girls basketball teams as both teams were eliminated in Eastern Mass. Division Three North Semifinal games last night.

Pentucket Beats Newburyport, 46 to 32

The Newburyport Clippers girls basketball team played a tough defensive game against the No. 2 seeded Pentucket Sachems at Haverhill High School. Pentucket was a little sloppy coming off a 15-day layoff and Newburyport played them very tough in the first half. In the second half, Pentucket’s overall size advantage and skill came into play as they were able to get Newburyport into foul trouble in the second half of the game.

Pentucket now moves on to face the No. 3 seeded Swampscott team in the Division 3 North sectional semifinal game this coming tuesday.

See John Shimer’s article in the Daily News of Newburyport for a detailed game description.

Bedford Knocks Newburyport Out of Tournament, 71 to 52

The Newburyport boys basketball team ran out of gas against a very strong Bedford team last night in Division Three North Semifinal action at Bedford High School. Bedford which had only lost three games all year outscored the Clippers in all four quarters and showed why they are considered one of the best teams in Division Three North.

One of the highlights of the game was the performance of Chris Barry of Newburyport who led all scorers with 26 points.

See Dan Guttenplan’s summary of the game in the Daily News of Newburyport.

Congratulations to all the players, and especially the graduating seniors, for making it into the Eastern Mass. State Tournament this year.
