Intertown Twilight Baseball League

June 14, 2008

If you can’t find enough good baseball games to watch, then check out some of the games played in the Intertown Twilight League (ITL).

The Intertown Twilight League was founded in 1929 and is the oldest active amateur baseball league in the country. A fact that has been recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The ITL fields teams from Beverly, Hamilton, Ipswich, Manchester, Rockport, Rowley, & Topsfield. Most of the players are college or former college/high school players; a few have had professional experience.

The baseball fields used by the Rowley, Ipswich, Hamilton and Topsfield teams are pretty easy drives from Newburyport.

Check out their website for more information and their game schedules.

Clippers Steal Their Way To Cape Ann League (CAL) Championship

May 23, 2008

Congratulations to the Newburyport Clippers baseball team on capturing their fourth CAL title in the last five years. The Clippers finished the CAL portion of the season in a four-way tie for the CAL title with Masconomet, North Andover and Wilmington.  All four teams finished with identical CAL records of 10-3.

Newburyport got off to a slow start early in the season (1-4), but managed to turn it around and finished strong with a 10-3 CAL record. Overall they are 12-7 with one game remaining to be played on Sunday against Maimonides.

This year’s team lacked the big bats and the offensive power of past Clipper teams, but they made up for it with team speed, hustle and the ability to successfully steal bases. With one game remaining to play, Newburyport already has a school record 65 stolen bases.

The team speed should serve Newburyport well in the MIAA Division 3 Tournament.
