Football: Pentucket Stops Newburyport, 19-0

October 5, 2008

High School FootballThe Newburyport Clippers (0-5) are still searching for their first win of the season as they were shutout by the Pentucket Sachems 19-0, at World War Memorial Stadium in Newburyport on Friday, October 3rd in an evening game under the lights.

Not having two of their key players in the game didn’t bode well for the Clippers as David Freeman and Kyle LeBlanc were on the sidelines with injuries and did not play.

Pentucket scored on the first drive of the game after a great run back on the opening kickoff put the Sachems in excellent field position.

It was a frustrating game for the Clippers and the Clipper fans watching the game as Newburyport could march the ball down the field, but couldn’t find a way to advance or score on key 3rd and 4th play downs throughout the game, including a four play series at the one-yard line when they had a first and goal.

The icing on the cake for Pentucket was the 99-yard scoring drive that followed their goal line stop of the Clippers on the one-yard line. That was a game breaker for Newburyport.

Pentucket stopped the Clippers three different times when the Clippers had advanced the ball within the Pentucket 20 yard line. The Pentucket defense always came up with a big play and a big stop throughout the game when it mattered most.  This was the third straight shutout for the Pentucket team. That says a lot about their defense and their mindset.

Friday Night Football, October 3rd

October 3, 2008

Friday Night FootballThere are three local River Rival football games on the schedule for Friday evening, October 3rd.

All games start at 7:00 pm and the weather conditions are pretty nice. Nice, cool and dry. Perfect high school football weather.

Newburyport vs Pentucket (at Newburyport)
Newburyport (0-4) is still looking for its first win of the season. Pentucket (2-1) lost a lot of players last year, but is still finding ways to win this year and has rebounded after an opening season loss. Newburyport looked good last week against North Andover. Pentucket won last year’s game in the last minute. Newburyport should be motivated tonight.

Triton vs Ipswich (at Ipswich)
Triton (1-1) had a bye week last week. It will be interesting to see how they respond this week after their hard fought, one point loss to Hamilton-Wenham on a gutsy call to go for a two-point conversion to try and win the game.

Amesbury vs Lawrence (at Amesbury)
Is Amesbury (3-0) the team to beat in the Cape Ann Small Division? So far this season, they have looked impressive. Lawrence is a team that has shown improvement this year. Amesbury’s tenacity may be the key factor in the game.

Newburyport Loses In Overtime To North Andover, 15-13

September 27, 2008

FootballThe Newburyport Clippers (0-4), playing their strongest game of the year to date, lost a heart breaker to the North Andover Scarlet Knights (1-2), 15-13, in North Andover Friday evening.

They lost in overtime after the score was tied, 7-7, at the end of four quarters of regulation play. This season the Point After Touchdown (PAT) part of the game has been their Achilles heel.

Last night Newburyport scored on the first possession of overtime, but couldn’t convert on the two-point PAT conversion attempt. On North Andover’s overtime possession, the Scarlet Knights scored and successfully converted on their PAT conversion attempt to win the game by two points for their first win of the season.

Their were several bright spots for the Clippers team last night. The Clippers defense rose to the occasion last night and played a strong game against North Andover in weather conditions that started out very poor but improved as the game progressed. The heavy rain and and wind gusts slowly diminished throughout the game and had stopped for the most part by early in the third quarter.

Senior Derek Freeman had one of the strongest games of his career on offense and was the dominant rusher for the Clippers. He carried the ball for almost a hundred yards rushing and helped Newburyport extend drives several times throughout the game. The Clippers showed a more balanced offense this week and they were able to move the ball down the field throughout the game. The Clippers were hurt on offense a few times by fumbles which stopped potential scoring drives.
