If you want to explore the local area and look for wintering bald eagles in the Greater Newburyport/Plum Island area,  join Jock Purcell and Nancy Purcell of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, on Sunday morning as they search for bald eagles in the region

Deep winter is the best time to find bald eagles locally, and the lower Merrimack River is the best place to find them.

The swift currents and tidal flow in the Merrimack River keep portions of the river ice-free during the winter, providing critical feeding habitat for ducks and other wintering birds.

Local bald eagles may nest elsewhere in New England during the summer when food is plentiful, but in the winter when most lakes and rivers are frozen, they know they can come to the Merrimack River to find the ducks, fish, and carrion they need to survive.

During this three-hour program, we will search the lower Merrimack for bald eagles and other wintering birds at a number of sites, including Deer, Eagle, Carr, and Ram islands and several other places along the river.

Instructions and Directions: Meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center. Please wear warm clothing and waterproof footwear; bring binoculars and snacks.

Explore the Coastal Coves of Cape Ann on Friday, January 25th with Kirk Elwell, Birder-Naturalist and Scott Santino, Teacher-Naturalist of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.

Gloucester and Rockport are birding hot spots during the winter months. Visitors who do not know Cape Ann well can have a tough time navigating to find specialty birds such as a Barrow’s goldeneye or king eider.

Leave the navigation to us as we enjoy a day along the scenic coast. Participants will see a nice diversity of sea ducks, grebes, and loons. We’ll also keep an eye out for alcids such as black guillemot, razorbill, murre, and dovekie.

And, of course, a midday stop at a local coffee shop will warm the bones.

Instructions/Directions: Meet at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary for transportation by van and carpooling. Please note on the registration form if you desire a seat in a van (first-come, first-served).

Dress for the weather and bring a lunch, water, binoculars, a spotting scope if you have one, and field guides.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Bill Gette, Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director and Dave Weaver, Birder’s Certificate Program graduate for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.

It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

These very popular programs provide an excellent opportunity to explore one of the most productive birding areas in the country. To date, over 310 species of birds on these Wednesday field trips.

These field trips explore birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus is on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County. When appropriate, we will adjust our itinerary to search for rarities reported in the area.

Harpsichordist Peter Sykes will open the 2012 Jean C. Wilson Music Series on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 4:00 pm at the Unitarian Church, Newburyport.

Peter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. His playing has variously been called “compelling and moving,” “magnificent and revelatory,” and “bold, imaginative, and amazingly accurate.”

Sykes will perform works by Georg Böhm, Heinrich Scheidemann, Dieterich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach on a harpsichord made by Allan Winkler after Fleischer (Hamburg, 1716).

The Jean C. Wilson Music Series is named for one of the founders and the director of the music series for 27 years. Now, under the auspices of the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Music Committee, the Music Series typically offers three concerts held during the first three months of the year.

Classes will run on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.  Specialized classes focus on the basic fundamentals that are important for shaping both hockey and figure skating skills. Skaters have the chance to earn skill-badges throughout the series. Student to coach ratio is kept low and classes are available for skaters age 3 through adult.

All classes are taught by professional coaches who have been hired by North Shore Rink Management and who have successfully completed a comprehensive background screening process through the National Center for Safety Initiatives. Our next series of Learn to Skate will begin in April!

Artists Lully Schwartz, Joan Merrill, and Carol Reynolds at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Starting January 8th

A trio of Newburyport area artists will be showing their paintings of landscapes and wildlife at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center in an exhibit entitled “Observations.”

Carol Reynolds, Joan Merrill, and Lully Schwartz’s show can be seen at Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport from January 8 through February 26.

Gallery Reception: The public is cordially invited to meet the artists at a free gallery reception on Sunday, January 8, 2:30-4:00 pm. A portion of all purchases made during the exhibit helps to support Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats.

 The three artists state their vision collectively: “We live in a diverse region surrounded by nature. Over the years we have enjoyed the scenic views of Plum Island beach, the surrounding marshes, and the woodland trails. This exhibit holds just a few of our observations. We love and appreciate the beauty of the preserved habitats in Massachusetts, and it continues to inspire our painting.”

Coastal Landscape - Joan Merrill

Joan Merrill’s paintings reflect the beauty of her longtime home on the New England coast. Her primary medium is oil, but she is also an accomplished pastel painter.

Inspired by the luminous qualities of light and nature, Joan has studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School and the Boston Architectural Center. More recently she has studied with local artists Lully Schwartz, Robin Thornhill and Julie Airoldi. In her position as the business manager at the Newburyport Art Association, Joan is inspired by local and regional artists on a daily basis.

Little River Nature Trail - Carol Reynolds

Carol Reynolds studied painting and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from Syracuse University. She has been employed by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, The Nan Miller Gallery in Rochester, NY, and as gallery director at The Newburyport Art Association.

Currently working as a designer at Newburyport Framers, Carol is once again focusing on her own art after presenting, promoting, and exhibiting other artists’ work for many years. She paints landscapes in pastel and oil as well as commissioned portraits. Her artwork has been exhibited in many group and solo shows, where she has received various awards.

Going There - Lully Schwartz

Lully Schwartz is a nationally recognized artist who works in a painterly realist manner. Her oil paintings of birds, bees, and eggs in this exhibit pay homage to the ornithologist/naturalist and artist John James Audubon.

Lully is a graduate of the Boston Museum School and inducted member of NAWA, NY, NY. She is a 2011 award recipient for her oil painting now on view in the ” Femmes Artistes Vernissage” exhibition at the Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Join Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary Education Coordinator Andrew Prazar, on a Full Moon Hike at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, January 7th.

The sparkle of the full moon on a freshly fallen blanket of snow illuminates the forest like nothing else. With only the moon as our guide, we will hike through the sanctuary woods and enjoy this magical time. Since early January is often one of the quietest times of the year, we should be able to hear the hoots of owls and the howls of coyotes.

The light of the moon will also allow us to catch glimpses of nocturnal animals that usually move about in complete darkness. We will then return to the Barn to warm up with some hot chocolate!

Audience: Family (suitable for children ages 6 – 16 yrs)
Instructions: Meets in the Nature Center. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.
