On Friday, December 9th, Captains Rick and Karen Miles, of the expedition vessel Wanderbird, will present a slideshow of their expeditions to Newfoundland, Labrador and Greenland at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum in Essex, MA.

Be prepared to be amazed as they bring you to the lands of the Inuit, icebergs, polar bears, glaciers, Aurora Borealis and so much more!

Wanderbird

The Wanderbird is a 90′ North Sea Fishing Trawler the Miles’ have converted for expedition tourism travel. Each season the vessel travels 7,000 nautical miles from Equator to Arctic Circle in search of adventure, offshore camaraderie and natural wonders.

The Miles’ owned and operated the Maine Windjammer Schooner Timberwind for 15 years prior to owning the Wanderbird.

Rick fished commercially from Gloucester and other New England towns in the offshore lobster fishery for many years. Karen’s dad is a Maine lobsterman and she is a highly experienced licensed captain.

On Sunday, July 10th, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are offering an all day kayaking trip to the Isles of Shoals for intermediate level kayakers (some experience required; stamina necessary).

The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 12 miles off the New Hampshire/Maine coast. It is a great area to explore by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the wildlife on and around these Isles from your kayak.

The all day trip, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, includes a shuttle out to the Isles of Shoals from Newburyport, and on-deck barbecue lunch.

You’ll cruise from downtown Newburyport to the Isles of Shoals aboard the 48-foot cabin cruiser, the Erica Lee II. The Isles are located approximately 12 miles off the New England coast and are partly in New Hampshire and partly in Maine. They have a rich human history (both famous and infamous) and are a spectacular site for observing natural history.

Upon arrival at the Isles, participants can choose to paddle around the mothership in Gosport Harbor or head over to Smuttynose Island or to Star Island for ice cream. For the more adventurous, there will be a guided paddle to White Island or Lunging Island, depending on the conditions.

The price includes an on-deck barbeque lunch. Subtract $20 per person for double kayak rental. There is no discount if you use your own kayak. Experience Level: Intermediate III (some experience required; stamina necessary).

Paddling time: 5 hours with a 45-minute break and 1 hour for lunch.

On Sunday, August 7th, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are co-hosting an Introduction To Sea Kayaking course from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Participants will learn the basics of sea kayaking with an evening outing in the Plum Island estuary. Kayak and equipment rental are included in the fee.

Participants will learn safety precautions and paddling techniques and will gain confidence handling these very seaworthy boats. Participants will then paddle into the Plum Island estuary and explore tidal creeks, mudflats, and salt marshes.

Preregistration is required for this program. To register, please call 978-462-9998.

The fee covers single kayak rental. Subtract $10 per person for double kayak rental and $15 per person if you use your own kayak.

Exploring the Merrimack River by Kayak

The Merrimack River is a wonderful place to observe wildlife from a kayak.  During this all-day program, sponsored by the Joppa Flats Education Center and Plum Island Kayak, you’ll explore the river from scenic Rocks Village in Haverhill to Cashman Park in Newburyport.

We will explore the islands, mud bars, salt marshes, and shoreline of this beautiful river during a leisurely paddle. We expect to see egrets and herons, waterfowl, ospreys, shorebirds, and many other species.

Instruction in kayaking techniques and safety procedures will be provided by Plum Island Kayak. The fee covers single kayak rental. (Subtract $10 per person for double kayak rental and $15 per person if you use your own kayak.)

Experience Level: Beginner II (No experience required; some stamina necessary). Paddling time: 5 hours with a 1-hour lunch break. This event is for adults.

This month’s First Friday Social welcomes Gary Hildregh of the Portsmouth Shipyard Public Affairs Office. He will speak on the history of the shipyard.

He is an accomplished speaker and spokesman who regularly makes Shipyard presentations to civic and educational organizations throughout the region.
