On Sunday, August 1st, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are offering an all day kayaking trip to the Isles of Shoals for experienced kayakers.

The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 12 miles off the New Hampshire/Maine coast. It is a great area to explore by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the wildlife on and around these Isles from your kayak.

The all day trip, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, includes a shuttle out to the Isles of Shoals from Newburyport, and on-deck barbecue lunch.

You’ll cruise from downtown Newburyport to the Isles of Shoals aboard the 48-foot cabin cruiser, the Erica Lee II. The Isles are located approximately 12 miles off the New England coast and are partly in New Hampshire and partly in Maine. They have a rich human history (both famous and infamous) and are a spectacular site for observing natural history.

Upon arrival at the Isles, participants can choose to paddle around the mothership in Gosport Harbor or head over to Smuttynose Island or to Star Island for ice cream. For the more adventurous, there will be a guided paddle to White Island or Lunging Island, depending on the conditions.

The price includes an on-deck barbeque lunch. Subtract $20 per person for double kayak rental. There is no discount if you use your own kayak. Experience Level: Intermediate III (some experience required; stamina necessary).

Paddling time: 5 hours with a 45-minute break and 1 hour for lunch.

Meet at the Newburyport boardwalk (on the Merrimack River in downtown Newburyport).

This program is for adults: $160 for Mass Audubon members; $170 for nonmembers.

Hampton Beach Catamaran Regatta

In addition to enjoying the beach and all of the funky shops on the Ocean Blvd. beach strip, If you visit Hampton Beach on Saturday and Sunday, June 19th & 20th, you can watch the annual Hampton Beach Catamaran Regatta.

This event has become a highlight of the summer as champions and (relatively) new sailors alike converge on Hampton Beach for a weekend of sailing. The weekend is well organized, with races throughout the day. The races, which are held not too far off the beach, can easily be watched by visitors and non-sailors.

To watch the regatta, simply get yourself a good bit of sand a camera and relax and enjoy the proceedings.

Did you ever want to learn how to build a canoe? Do you have an interest in boat building? If you do,  this five-day program, Build Your Own 10 ½’-15 ½’ Canoe,  at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Essex, MA is for you.

In this 5-day course held at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum you will build your own double paddle canoe – either a 10 ½’ solo, an 11 ½’ solo, a 13 ½” tandem, or a 15 ½’ tandem – classic lightweight craft for easy car-topping and carrying.

The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum preserves the history of New England’s wooden shipbuilding industry since the 1630s and maintains one of the best maritime collections in the region.

On Thursday, May 27th, the Essex Shipbuilding Museum is holding its fourth and final presentation as part of its symposium in recognition of the 20th anniversary of the return of the Evelina M. Goulart, a rare transitional dragger built at the A.D. Story Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts in 1927.

The dragger, returned in 1990, is one of seven remaining Essex-built schooners in existence and has now been on exhibit at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum for longer than most of her sisters survived at sea.

Join friends and members of the Museum for the conclusion of its four-part symposium on the Evelina M. Goulart. The presentation is being made by two national experts in the field of maritime history and preservation: Erik Ronnberg, Jr. and Dana C. Hewson.

Part Four: the Role of Preservation and the Evelina M. Goulartwill begin with a virtual video tour hosted by shipwrights Harold A. Burnham and John Drake, which will take viewers completely around the exterior and throughout the minute details of the interior of the Evelina M. Goulart, objectively assessing the current structural integrity of the vessel.

During the past three months, the Evelina M. Goulart Symposium has covered the maritime history of Cape Ann, the families and cultural diversity of the Gloucester fishing fleet, the history of the American fishing schooner and the evolution of the transitional trawler; the remarkable story of the return of the Evelina M .Goulart to Essex; and the 20 year history of the documentation, preservation and interpretation of the vessel.

Despite the huge contribution that she has made to bring history alive for our visitors, her future is uncertain. A goal of this symposium is to gather interested individuals to form a committee to decide what our options are. This fourth, and final, part of the symposium will bring together two of the best museum experts who have had to face similar challenges.

The evening will be topped off by a friendly get-together over coffee and snacks to exchange ideas regarding the future of this unique part of the museum’s collection.

On Saturday, May 15, the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Essex, MA is having a Members’ Day for all present, past, and potential members.

The purpose of the event is threefold:

1. To acquaint all of the museum’s members and others with some of  the museum’s  new facilities and the current state of the shipyard.
2. To show to all some of the educational exhibits that are used with school group tours and not often seen by others.
3. And to just get together to socialize, celebrate a new season and enjoy time by the water.

If you come, you can explore and take part in the following events:

• Take the new self-guided tours
• Steam shed demonstrations of plank bending
• Tour the marvelous exhibits at the Central School House
• Interpretation of our flagship the Lewis H. Story and trunnel making
• Opportunities to view some of our historic DVDs of Essex ships and shipbuilding.
• Knot tying for kids – they’ll make friendship bracelets and sailor’s wristlets.

In addition to all of this, Dawn Robertson and Kurt Wilhelm will be on hand to sign their book Essex, which will also be on sale, a very interesting new title in the Images of America series.
Concurrently with Member Day activities, the Cape Ann Rowing Club will be using part of the facility for morning staging and afternoon awards for their annual Essex River Race. Some of you may want to participate in that race in the morning and join us in the afternoon.

Incentives:

Any member who brings or recruits a non-member who joins the Museum by June 30, 2010 will receive next year’s membership at half price, and any non-member who takes out membership that day will receive a free Museum T-shirt.

Chowder and gumbo will be available for purchase from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The Essex Shipbuilding Museum invites you to come to the museum on Tuesday, September 29th for a presentation by internationally known sailor Rich Wilson.

Rich finished 9th in the Vendee Globe 2008-9, a solo, non-stop, sailing race around the world. 

Here are some interesting facts: 

• He was the only American, the only asthmatic, and the oldest skipper (58) in the fleet.
• Of 30 starters, only 11 finished.

Wilson endured broken ribs, a facial gash, compressed vertebrae, hurricane force gales, an ascent up the 90′ mast, crushing fatigue, fear, and gear breakage in braving the course via the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn, in his 60′ monohull Great American III.

If you’re in the area, make sure you drop by the Newburyport waterfront and take an onboard tour of this beautiful example of American shipbuilding and maritime craftsmanship.

The tall ship, Alabama, owned by the successful New England apparel retail business, the Black Dog, will be docked at the Newburyport waterfront for dockside tours by the public.

The Black Dog, based in Martha’s Vineyard, has a retail store in Newburyport, the Newburyport Black Dog General Store, at 19 Water Street, Newburyport.

On Friday, August 14th, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are co-hosting an Introduction To Sea Kayaking course from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Participants will learn the basics of sea kayaking with an evening outing in the Plum Island estuary. Kayak and equipment rental are included in the fee.

If you appreciate beautiful ships, the sailing research vessel Corwith Cramer, a 134-foot steel brigantine owned by the Sea Education Association (SEA) of Woods Hole, will be in Gloucester for the upcoming weekend. She will be docked at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center from Friday, July 17th through Sunday, July 19th.

Onboard Tours From 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Saturday, July 18th

The crew of the Corwith Cramer will welcome visitors aboard on Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. You will learn about the vessel and the research conducted on its decks and in its lab. The Corwith Cramer’s visit is one of many activities offered at the Heritage Center to provide Gloucester students with hands-on opportunities to learn about marine science.

Program For Teachers And Students From 1:00 to 3:00 PM

A special program will aldo be conducted for teachers, and middle and high school students from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. There is no charge for this program, but interested teachers and students must register in advance by calling the Heritage Center at 978-281-0470.

Research Equipment And Laboratory

The Corwith Cramer is a floating laboratory and research center. Onboard research equipment includes oceanographic sampling gear such as plankton nets, trawls, cores, dredges, and Nisken bottles.

The ship’s lab is outfitted with modern sampling and analytic gear including a digital recording bathythermograph, salinometer, fluorometer, spectrophotometer, and four mini computers for data recovery, processing and storage.

About Sea Association of Woods Hole

Sea Education Association (SEA) offers college students a study abroad that challenges them intellectually and physically by combining the sailing adventure of a lifetime with the study of the deep ocean. 

Students from more than 100 universities have participated in an SEA Semester, an interdisciplinary program which combines six weeks of land based study at Woods Hole (one of the world’s great center’s for ocean research) with six weeks at sea aboard the Corwith Cramer or one of SEA’s other research vessels.
