Maritime Night Hike, Salisbury Beach State Reservation, Thursday, August 13th
August 11, 2009
When: Thursday, August 13th, from 8:00 to 9:00 pmWhere: Salisbury Beach State Reservation, Beach Road, Route 1A, Salisbury, MA
Maritime Night Hike At Salisbury Beach State Reservation
If you want to learn about the maritime history of Salisbury Beach and enjoy an evening exploring the Salisbury Beach coastline, take one of the Thursday evening hikes/walks offered by Salisbury Beach State Reservation during the summer.
Join the reservation’s staff educator for a journey back through time along the Salisbury beach coastline.
For more than 100 years, surfmen (predecessors of the modern day Coast Guard) patrolled this stretch of beach in search of stranded vessels. This maritime evening hike will retrace their route, discover the grandeur of the beach at night, along with local tales of maritime heritage, heroism
and adventure.
With a little luck you may even glimpse a few of the many amazing nocturnal creatures –
hidden in trees or cast up by the waves — that these surfmen would have witnessed on their journey
through the night.

- The 141′ Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of one of America’s pioneering colonial ships that traveled to the New World from Sweden in 1638.
- The 150′ Peacemaker, built in Brazil by an Italian family of boat builders and now a symbol of unity among people.
- The 55′ Must Roos, a replica of a pirate ship complete with cannons and the swashbuckling, sword fighting ‘Pirates of the Dark Rose.’
