More than 240 vendors sell their wares at the popular Todd Farm Flea Market every Sunday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Sunday flea market is open from March 18th to November 25th, 2012.

Note: The flea market is closed on Easter Sunday, Sunday April 8th 2012.

The Todd Farm Flea Market, a local landmark and tradition on the North Shore of coastal Massachusetts, is a great Sunday flea market for early risers as it opens at 5:00 am and closes at 3:00 pm.

Rowley’s 9th annual “Some Like it Hot!” Chili Cookoff will be held Saturday, October 23rd from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Main Street (Route 1A), Rowley.

Chili lovers can look forward to sampling 20 or so versions of this tasty delight judged by 5 local celebrities. Admission includes cornbread, veggies, hot dogs, dessert and the featured item; varied chili recipes including red, green, meat and vegetarian options.

Ipswich Ale, Stone Cat Ale, and Mercury soda will be available for purchase from our co-sponsor Mercury Brewing Company. Enjoy entertainment by The Three Amigos Trio, craft activities for the kids, raffles and door prizes. Co-sponsor The First National Bank of Ipswich is helping the cook-off “go green” by providing biodegradable paper goods for the event!

Sponsored by the The Friends of the Rowley Public Library and co-sponsored by Mercury Brewing and The First National Bank of Ipswich, proceeds from this always fun community fundraising event will benefit Rowley library programs.

Tickets:

Cost: $15 individual, $25 for couples and $5 for children under age 12. Tickets are limited so buy early!

Tickets are available at the Rowley Public Library, Old Town Bread and Salt Marsh Antiques.

Contestants who wish to enter the chili cookoff contest can download the entry form and rules from the Rowley Public Library website. The deadline for entries is Friday, October 15, 2010.

Where: Meet at the Rowley train station at 10:24 a.m. as the train arrives from Boston and Beverly.

The Brookline Bird Club will be exploring Rowley to Newburyport on Saturday, May 8th in the late morning to mid-afternoon time frame. They will be searching to see Orchard Orioles.

These trips are open to all and are free. If you’d like to go and explore regional birding hot spots with them, meet them at the Rowley train station at 10:24 a.m. as the train arrives from Boston and Beverly.

Annual Book and Bake Sale at Rowley Public Library

The Friends of the Rowley Public Library are holding their Annual Book Sale and Bake Sale at the Rowley Public Library on Saturday, May 1st, rain or shine, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The event will be held inside the Rowley Library.

In addition to many homemade baked goods, there will be a hot dog stand with refreshments for hungry lunchtime shoppers.

“It’s such a fun event, because in addition to the terrific selection of books, the baked goods, coffee and hot dog stand make it attractive for people to browse and linger,” says Julie Bernier, Friends’ volunteer and long-time book sale chairperson. “This is the best selection of books and media I’ve seen in years! We have loads of great quality items for all ages and interests,” according to Bernier.

Books: Books range in age from children’s and young adult through adult, with hard cover and soft cover fiction and non fiction including Mystery, Thriller, Romance, History, Religion, Cookbooks, Adventure, Biography & Memoir, Self-Help, Health, Gardening, Art, How-To and many more.

Audio and Video: Audio and Video titles are also available for all ages along with some puzzles and games.

Priced between $0.33 and $5.00, most items are gently used or like new, and make great gifts for birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Friends members are encouraged to do their book sale shopping during at this special Preview Night at the library.

Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while you browse the titles.

Simply bring your Friends of the Rowley Library membership card and you’ll have first crack at the offerings.

Not a member or time to renew? You can sign up at the door!
Most annual membership fees range from $5.00 to $25.00, and all proceeds help to fund library programs throughout the year.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

The center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.

Appropriate for all birding levels. Pre-registration is not required.

You are invited to join Newburyport Birders as they search for birds on Nelson Island, a portion of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, November 29th for an afternoon of birding.

You’ll learn birding skills and feel the thrill of finding and identifying birds as we search for birds on our walk to Nelson Island. Join Newburyport Birders and discover your love of learning and the thrill of birding.

Be prepared with sturdy, waterproof, walking shoes for walking on unpaved and often wet, unimproved trails.

There are no facilities at this site. Bring binoculars or borrow ours.

Dress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.

Fee:

The fee for this program is $20 for 2 participants ~ Bring a friend birding!

The First Congregational Church of Rowley will host its annual Olde Tyme Country Fair on Saturday, November 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm.

The fair will feature Christmas crafts, handcrafts, plants, kissing balls and wreaths, baked goods, attic treasures, a raffle table, silent auction and cookie decorating and a “For Kids Only” shopping room.

Santa will visit the Fair from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, and a spaghetti supper will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Admission and parking for the fair are free.
