Maudslay State Park, the former Moseley family estate on the Merrimack River, is one of the jewels of the Greater Newburyport region. The 480-acre park offers commanding views of the Merrimack River and features 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pines, and one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts.

The Mosley Family purchased this lovely piece of property and turned it into a regal, landscaped estate, complete with formal gardens and green houses. Come learn the history of this family, the resources that they preserved and the changes in the land over time.

Led by the park interpreter, you will experience the changes in Maudslay over the spring, summer and fall. A perfect
after work activity. Comfortable walking shoes and bug spray are recommended. Rain or shine.

Join the Maudslay State Park park interpreter on this moderately paced walk walk to view different areas of the park and experience various interpretations. You will experience the changes in Maudslay over the spring, summer and fall. A perfect after work activity.

The Thursday evening stroll is a great way to get a more informed view of what is in the park and its history. A different trail is taken every week so by the end of the summer, you will have walked the entire park!

This is one of the best times of the year to tour and explore Maudslay State Park in Newburyport and view the spectacular mountain laurels and the famous rhododendrons for which Maudslay is well known.

On Saturday, you can join the Maudslay State Park interpreter on a walk through the park to see all that has bloomed during the current week. It’s a great way to get to know and explore this resource rich park and its blooms.

The cycle of bloom at Maudslay State Park is ongoing and ever changing between mid-April and mid-June. Come once a week to see what has newly emerged in this fantastic floral landscape!

Participants should wear waterproof boots and long pants!

Nets and buckets are provided.

The program lasts about an hour.

INTRODUCTION TO SEA KAYAKING

On Thursday, June 23rd, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are co-hosting an Introduction To Sea Kayaking course from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Participants will learn the basics of sea kayaking with an evening outing in the Plum Island estuary. Kayak and equipment rental are included in the fee.

Participants will learn safety precautions and paddling techniques and will gain confidence handling these very seaworthy boats. Participants will then paddle into the Plum Island estuary and explore tidal creeks, mudflats, and salt marshes.

Preregistration is required for this program. To register, please call 978-462-9998.

The fee covers single kayak rental. Subtract $10 per person for double kayak rental and $15 per person if you use your own kayak.

Experience Level: Beginner I – no experience required; easiest paddling. Paddling time: 2 hours.

AFTER-SCHOOL OUTDOOR SAFARI: MUDFLATS

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport is offering a new after-school program, Outdoor Safaris, for children ages 9 to 11 years. Children in the program will play out the roles of geologists, chemists, and biologists throughout this new series with Joppa Flats Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings.

The program consists of four safaris:

• Wednesday, September 22nd: Mudflats Safari
• Wednesday, October 20th: Tide Pool Safari
• Wednesday, November 3rd: Salt Marsh Safari
• Wednesday, December 8th: Sand Dune Safari

The outdoor explorations for each safari will start off with a group game to burn off some steam, followed by new and exciting experiences in a coastal setting. Children will explore, observe, investigate, and compare the inhabitants, their adaptations, and the changes these organisms undergo in autumn.

The first safari, Mudflats Safari, is being held on Wednesday, September 22nd, from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm at the Joppa Flats Education Center. Rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear.

Fee: Children $14.00 (members)/$18.00 (non-members)

 This program is open to children ages 9 to 11. Parent volunteer drivers may be needed. Parents are welcome, but they are not required to stay.

Registration: Registration is required for this program. A health form for your child will accompany your registration confirmation and will need to be completed and submitted the day of the program.
