You are invited to attend the Byfield Days 2010 festivities this weekend in Byfield, MA.

Most of the events except take place in Byfield Village between the Community United Methodist Church and the Byfield Community Arts Center.

On Sunday, June 6th, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, is offering a family ecology cruise aboard the Yankee Clipper.

This is a nice way to see and learn about the ecology of the lower Merrimack River ecosystem.

Lisa Hutchings of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center and the crew of Harbor Tour’s Yankee Clipper will host this exploratory cruise of the ecosystem of the lower Merrimack River that runs through Newburyport, Amesbury and Salisbury.

The tour is being offered from 8:45 am to 10:45 am

Meet at the Newburyport boardwalk (on the Merrimack River in downtown Newburyport)

Cost:

Adults: $20 for Mass Audubon members; $27 for nonmembers

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, located at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport, is a natural history education center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and on Monday holidays, 8:30 to 4:00 pm.

Discovery Day Destination — Joppa Flats, Newburyport, Birding and Seashore Adventures: A Nature Free-For-All!

Discover birding on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, hunt for treasures on Plum Island’s seashores, and hold live sea creatures from our touch tank aquarium.
10 am to 3 pm

Come to the Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport for a full day of free nature activities!

Go birding around Newburyport area hotspots; play the Great Migration Game; explore our salt marsh with Joppa Flats naturalists; or hold live sea creatures from the Center’s touch tank aquarium.

Call in advance to sign up for the 9:30 to 11:30 birding excursion (adults and families with children age 12 and up).

Otherwise, drop in for an hour or stay all day. No preregistration required.

Instructions and Directions: Please dress for the weather, since some activities will take place outdoors.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

The center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is offering a free Piping Plover Workshop on Saturday, April 3rd at its Visitor Center in Newburyport (for ages 10 and older).

Come and learn about this amazing bird. You’ll learn about the natural history of the piping plover, participate in some plover activities, and even help to make a plover display. That display will be used to educate others about this bird listed by the federal government as a threatened species, as well as what we do to help it.

Space in this program is limited, so advanced registration is required.

16th Annual Draft Horse Plow Day

Celebrate the arrival of spring at Spencer Pierce Little Farm, Newbury and stop by and check out the 16th Annual Draft Horse Plow Day activities that will be going on at the farm.

The Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, a National Historic Landmark, is a family-friendly site with activities for visitors of all ages. It features an imposing architectural jewel, a late seventeenth-century major house built as the country seat of wealthy Newburyport merchants. It is also a foster farm in partnership with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, with farm animals that may be visited year round.

Draft Horse Plow Day Activities

Teams of draft horses and mules from throughout New England participate in plowing demonstrations as part of this annual event. Learn how horses are harnessed, hitched, and cared for.

• Watch the sheep shearing and see how the wool is washed, carded, and spun into yarn.
• Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, farm animals, blacksmithing demonstrations, children’s crafts and games, lunch and more.
• Listen to fiddle music from E. J. Ouelette and watch a puppet show by Martha Dana.

And for all you connoisseurs of fine American Craft Beers, one of the North Shore’s best ales, Ipswich Ale, will be on draft!

If you want to explore the local area and see the birds of the Greater Newburyport, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center program, Saturday Birding: What’s That Bird?, may be what you’re looking for.

The two hour program provides a quick weekend jaunt to see the birds of greater Newburyport. No experience required. Limited to six participants. Children age 8 and up welcome.

Although this program is meant for people who have had little to no exposure to birds, anyone with a curiosity about birds or nature is welcome.

Fees: $7; free with the purchase of a new membership.

Looking for something to do during the February school vacation?

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, will be offering family based activities during the vacation period.

Daily themes, art activities, experiments, and more will be offered in a casual drop-in atmosphere for families with children ages 2 to 12. Adults must accompany children.

Teacher-naturalist Lisa Hutchings will be offering a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities, keeping minds active and hands busy during school break.

Schedule:

• Tuesday, February 16th, Penguins of the South Pole, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
• Wednesday, February 17th: Polar Bears of the North Pole, 10:00 a.m.  to 2:00 p.m.
• Thursday, February 18th, Birds of the Tropics, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m

Pre-registration is not required.

$5.00.
