Yankee Homecoming Events Scheduled for Thursday, July 29th 2010

•  9:00 am to 4:00 pm: Heritage Tours: Piel Craftsmen, 3½ Center Street across from Ten Center Street restaurant. Established over 50 years ago, Piel Craftsmen have produced over 20,000 ship models. Over the years craftsmen have also restored thousands of ship model wrecks to their original condition. Come visit and talk to staff and learn about the history of building ship models including the 1800s clipper ships, schooners, and whaling ships.
• 10:00 am to Noon: Heritage Tours: The Cemetery Crawl- Meet on Hill Street at Highland Cemetery. Bronson DeStadler will be leading the St. Paul’s Graveyard tour. Tour begins at Highland Cemetery and you can say hello to a writer, a shipbuilder, and the first mayor of Newburyport. The next stop is across the street at Old Hill Burying Ground to visit gravesites of clockmakers, one of the first bridge builders in the United States, and African Americans. The tour concludes at St. Paul’s Graveyard where you’ll hear about the history of St. Anna’s Chapel and some well known Newburyport citizens.
• 10:00 am to 2:00 pm: Coast Guard Open House, Coast Guard Station, 65B Water Street, Newburyport.
  Tours of the station and the boats in the yard will be conducted free of charge. Bring your children.
• 10:30 am to 12:30pm: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.
• 2:30 to 4:30 pm: Heritage Tours: Life in Newburyport: 1950 to 1985. Newburyport Public Library, Program Room.
• 2:30 to 4:30 pm: Heritage Tours: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours. By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.
• 7:30 to 9:00pm: Waterfront Concert Series, Beatlejuice, Beatles tribute band, Waterfront Stage, Newburyport

Want to see the five lighthouses of Cape Ann from the water and help support the Thacher Island Association?

On Friday, July 30th the association will be having its Annual Lighthouses of Cape Ann Cruise, leaving at 6:00 p.m. from Cape Ann Whale Watch in Gloucester aboard the Hurricane II.

Jeremy D’Entremont, lighthouse expert and author, will narrate the sunset cruise around Cape Ann to see the following five lighthouses. This is your chance to see the following lighthouses:

• Thacher Island’s Twin Lighthouses
• Annisquam Light
• Ten Pound Island Light
• Eastern Point Light.

Proceeds from the cruise benefit the Thacher Island Association, which is raising money for a new boat to bring visitors to and from the island.

Cash bar, sandwiches and snacks available or bring your own. (Note: No liquor may be brought on board)

The boat leaves promptly at 6:00 pm from the Cape Ann Whale Watch docks on Main St.in Gloucester.
and returns at 9:00 pm.

Clipper City Rail Trail Tiptoe Walking Tour

You can take a 90-minute guided walking tour of Newburyport’s recently opened Clipper City Rail Trail on Sunday, July 25th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. The 1.1 mile trail is fully paved and includes a new 85-foot pedestrian bridge has over Low Street, Newburyport. The trail runs from the Newburyport Commuter Rail Station (MBTA) to the Merrimack River.

Life in Newburyport: 1950 to 1985 by by Jean Foley Doyle

Interested in Newburyport’s more recent history? Want to learn about what was going on in Newburyport from 1950 through 1985?

If you are, you may be interested in attending local author Jean Doyle’s discussion of her newly published second book, Life in Newburyport: 1950 to 1985 at the Newburyport Public Library on Thursday evening, July 29th at 7:00 pm.

Signed books will be available pending publication.

The years 1950-1985 were, in many ways, the most tumultuous years in Newburyport’s history. This follow-up to Life in Newburyport, Book I, chronicles the city’s struggle as it rises from its designation as a distressed area to achieve the role of a “model city.”

Reassembled through accounts in the Daily News, city documents, pictures, and the memories of its people, Life in Newburyport, 1950-1985 is a gift to the city and to future generations.

Some of the topics and events covered in her book include:

•  
  • The Korean War: its affect on Newburyport, and the stories of those who served in the armed forces.
  •  The “last hurrah” of Andrew “Bossy” Gillis
  • Stories of those who served in the Vietnam War, and those of the anti-war movement
  • The struggle for historic preservation during the restoration of the downtown district
  • The stories of the controversy that ensued over the waterfront, including the views of the commercial interests, the Friends of the Waterfront, and those who supported an Open Waterfront;

About The Author:

Jean Foley Doyle, a lifelong resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts, is the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven children. She graduated from Newburyport High School (NHS) in 1947 and joined the ranks of her peers who married young and started their families after World War II, thus contributing to the baby boomer generations. She stayed at home for the next nineteen years.

Finally able to achieve her dream of a college education, she graduated summa cum laude from Merrimack College in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in history. In 1972, she earned her master’s degree in history from the University of New Hampshire.

Returning to her alma mater, Jean taught history and international relations for thirty years until her retirement in 1999. While teaching at NHS, Jean was responsible for implementing the highly successful community service program which allowed hundreds of students to get to know and contribute to the Newburyport community.

An avid gardener, she lives in Newbury, Massachusetts.

On Saturday, July 24th, you can take a free, one-hour quarry tour at Halibut Point State Park, Cape Ann, Massachusetts. The park which is another coastal gem on Massachusetts’s North Shore is an easy ride from the Newburyport area. If you haven’t been there, it is well worth exploring.

The tour includes a film, granite-splitting demonstration, and a tour of the Babson Farm Quarry.

Halibut Point itself is made of sheets of 440 million year-old granite that now descend from rocky headland to the tidal pools below.

As a result of the shallow soil, constant exposure to onshore winds, and a history of frequent fires, the vegetation includes few trees. Catbriar, bayberry, blueberry, arrowwood, shadbush, and an assortment of wildflowers grow among the ledges.

Each winter, many species of seabirds, including loons, grebes, ducks and an occasional puffin, feed in the rich offshore waters.

Beginning in the 1840s, granite was quarried from this area, first on a small scale and primarily along the coast, and then on a much larger scale when the Rockport Granite Company acquired the Babson Farm quarry and expanded its operation.

Shortly after the Cape Ann granite industry collapsed in 1929, 17 acres on the eastern side of the quarry were purchased and given to the Trustees of Reservations. The remainder of the area sat unused until late in World War II when a fire control tower (now the park’s Visitors Center) was constructed to provide aiming information for the massive coastal defense guns that guarded Boston and Portsmouth Harbors.

Halibut Point is a uniquely beautiful coastal seascape. Looking seaward on a clear day, the view stretches from Crane Beach in Ipswich to Mount Agamenticus in Maine and the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire.

All programs at the park are free and open to the public.
The daily parking fee is $2.00 per vehicle.
