Are you new to the world of digital photography, or have you had a digital camera for a while and still don’t feel you’re getting the most from it? If that’s the case, then this workshop on Saturday, October 30th at the Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport will be of interest to you.

Mass Audubon’s Camp Wildwood Director Bob Speare will lead this workshop and field trip. Bob has a deep interest and expertise in photography and teaches photography classes for Mass Audubon sanctuaries across the state.

Bring your camera and learn more about its capabilities, especially out in the wild.

What You Will Learn: This workshop is designed to help you understand the features of your digital camera, and learn some techniques that will help you to take better digital photos. You’ll earn more about optical and digital zoom, white balance, ISO, resolution, proper lighting, focus, depth of field, and composition.

Digital Photography Software Applications:  The workshop will also take a look at some of the software applications that can help you enhance your images and you’ll learn how to crop and size them properly to create stunning prints.

In the second half of the class, we will head outside to the beautiful wildlife sanctuary to practice what we have learned.

Fee: $60. Pre-registration is required. 

Instructions and Directions: Bring your camera, fully charged, and its manual, but please have a basic understanding of how your camera operates.

Where To Meet: Meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport.

Bring a lunch, snacks, and drinks, and wear clothing appropriate for the weather.

PortMedia, Newburyport’s non-profit community access television station, and Newburyport Youth Services are offering a TV Studio Youth Summer Program at  PortMedia’s  Graf Road, studio in August.

The two-week program is being offered from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) from August 9th through August 20th, 2010.

Cost: The program fee is $180.

The Newburyport Boys Basketball Association is offering a summer hoops program for boys in grades five through eight at the Newburyport High School gymnasium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, starting Tuesday, June 29th.

• 7th and 8th Graders:  Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 pm from June 29th through August 10th.
• 5th and 6th Graders: Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 pm from July 1st  through August12th.

Fall Birds of Plum Island

North Shore Community College is offering a three hour class, Fall Birds of Plum Island, on Sunday, September 12th at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island. The instructor for the class is Sue McGrath, President of the Essex County Ornithological Club and owner of  Newburyport Birders.

Bird watching at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island is exciting because it’s a world famous, productive site.

Learn to appreciate the world of birds!
During this three-hour class, you’ll learn about birds in an “outdoor classroom”.

This class will provide new birders with the aids needed to begin bird identification ~ special characteristics, bird behavior and habitat preferences. The class will focus on bird identification techniques.

You’ll be walking over gentle terrain at a slow pace. Sturdy footwear is necessary along with a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, hat, insect repellent and sunscreen.
Bring a snack and a beverage. Class fee includes interpretive materials.

Autumn Birds of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island

Northern Essex Community College is offering a three hour class, Autumn Birds of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island,  on Sunday, October, 17th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport. The instructor for the class is Sue McGrath, President of the Essex County Ornithological Club & owner of  Newburyport Birders.

PortMedia, Newburyport’s non-profit community access television station, is offering a two-hour training class at its Graf Road, Newburyport studio on Thursday, June 17th starting at 7:00 pm. The class will focus on the Camcorder & Orientation.

It’s a great class to take if you have an interest in learning how to produce and edit your own video productions for personal use and/or for showing on PortMedia’s community access channel.

Become certified to use PortMedia’s portable equipment including camcorders and microphones.

Join Hilary Russell of the Berkshire Boatbuilding School to Build Your Own Canoe

Did you ever want to learn how to build a canoe? Do you have an interest in boat building? If you do,  this five-day program, Build Your Own 10 ½’-15 ½’ Canoe,  at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Essex, MA is for you.

In this 5-day course held at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum you will build your own double paddle canoe – either a 10 ½’ solo, an 11 ½’ solo, a 13 ½” tandem, or a 15 ½’ tandem – classic lightweight craft for easy car-topping and carrying.

The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum preserves the history of New England’s wooden shipbuilding industry since the 1630s and maintains one of the best maritime collections in the region.

Costs are $995 for solo boats; $1250 for 13′ tandem boat; $1350 for 15′ tandem boat.

The annual Clipper Girls Basketball Camp, under the direction of NHS athletic director John Daileanes, will be offered Monday, June 21st (Noon to 5:00 p.m.) and Tuesday, June 22nd through Thursday, June 24th (8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) in the Newburyport High School gymnasium.

You and your pre-schooler(s) are invited to join the staff of Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, for the Kidleidoscope Program from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

Each week the Kidleidoscope program will introduce your pre-schooler to a new topic about nature in a three-part program that includes:

• a story
• a craft and
• an activity (that includes outdoor exploration).

Each program lasts about an hour.

Where To Meet:

Meet at the Park headquarters building on 74 Curzon Mill Road.
This program is for ages 3 to 6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Maudslay State Park, the former Moseley family estate on the Merrimack River, is one of the jewels of the Greater Newburyport region. The 480-acre park offers commanding views of the Merrimack River and features 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pines, and one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts.

It’s a great place for walking, biking, horseback riding and informal picnics. The parking fee for the park is $2.00.
