The 53rd Yankee Homecoming Celebration, an annual Newburyport tradition, begins on Sunday, July 25th and runs through Sunday, August 1st.

Yankee Homecoming Events Scheduled for Friday, July 30th 2010

9:00 am to 4:00 pm: Heritage Tours: Piel Craftsmen, 3½ Center Street across from Ten Center Street restaurant. Established over 50 years ago, Piel Craftsmen have produced over 20,000 ship models. Over the years craftsmen have also restored thousands of ship model wrecks to their original condition. Come visit and talk to staff and learn about the history of building ship models including the 1800s clipper ships, schooners, and whaling ships.
10:00 am to 11:00 am: Heritage Tours: Old Hill Burying Ground Gravestone Restoration Project. Meet on Greenleaf Street behind Bartlet Mall. Learn about the current gravestone restoration project and see the process of the repair and restoration of leaning, fallen, and broken stones. Visit gravesites of African Americans, clockmakers, and the author of The Relic of the Revolution.
10:30 am to 12:30pm and 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.
7:30 to 9:00pm: Waterfront Concert Series, ENTRAIN, the eclectic Martha’s Vineyard-based six-piece band, Waterfront Stage, Newburyport.

Join the Blue Ocean Societyaboard the M/V Prince of Whales in Newburyport on Tuesday evening, August 10th 2010, for a cruise on the Merrimack River.

The cruise features DJ Ron Reid, a cash bar, light snacks and raffle prizes. All proceeds benefit the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation.

Yankee Homecoming Events Scheduled for Thursday, July 29th 2010

10:00 am to Noon: Heritage Tours: The Cemetery Crawl- Meet on Hill Street at Highland Cemetery. Bronson DeStadler will be leading the St. Paul’s Graveyard tour. Tour begins at Highland Cemetery and you can say hello to a writer, a shipbuilder, and the first mayor of Newburyport. The next stop is across the street at Old Hill Burying Ground to visit gravesites of clockmakers, one of the first bridge builders in the United States, and African Americans. The tour concludes at St. Paul’s Graveyard where you’ll hear about the history of St. Anna’s Chapel and some well known Newburyport citizens.
10:00 am to 2:00 pm: Coast Guard Open House, Coast Guard Station, 65B Water Street, Newburyport.
Tours of the station and the boats in the yard will be conducted free of charge. Bring your children.
10:30 am to 12:30pm: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.
2:30 to 4:30 pm: Heritage Tours: Life in Newburyport: 1950 to 1985. Newburyport Public Library, Program Room.

If you want to add to your summer beach experience, the Blue Ocean Music Hall on Salisbury Beach is having a Buffett Beach Blast on Wednesday evening, July 28th. with a tailgate party followed by a show by the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, Changes in Latitudes.

Tickets: Tailgate Party – $15 per car (Note: the Tailgate Party is optional; you can go the Show at 8:00 pm for $25 without going to the Tailgate Party.)

PortMedia Kicks Off Classics Series With Yankee Homecomings Of Yesteryear

The new series PortMedia Classics debuts Yankee Homecoming week in Newburyport with several events from the past 25 years.

Hosted by Wally Thurlow, PortMedia Classics (PMC) features the programs created by Newburyporters through cable access beginning in the early 1980s.

Thurlow has spent the summer digitizing archived videotapes at PortMedia to create the series, which will become a staple on Channel 10 – Newburyport’s public access channel on the Comcast cable system.

The summer season at Newburyport’s premiere outdoor venue, the Maudslay Arts Center, continues on Saturday, July 24th with a performance by the Lance Bryant Quintet.

Lance Bryant, who also composes and arranges, comes out of Markham, Illinois, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he studied saxophone and, composition and arranging. Lance fostered musical relationships with fellow classmates, saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Greg Osby, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Cyrus Chestnut and other renowned musicians.

After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s, Lance continued his education, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society.

Throughout his music career, Lance’s talents as an arranger, composer, saxophonist or vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton) on which he arranged a song for the late Tito Puente; Swingin’ Live, Buddha Boogie and Settin’ The Pace, featuring the music of Frank Foster, on Swing46 Records for band leader George Gee; and Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Carla Cook.

Showtime: 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:00pm.
Ticket Prices: General seating $20 (seniors $8; free to children under 12). Patio seating (tables and chairs) is $20, while lawn seating (bring your own chairs or blankets) is $18. Children 12 and under are free.
