Harpsichordist Peter Sykes will open the 2012 Jean C. Wilson Music Series on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 4:00 pm at the Unitarian Church, Newburyport.

Peter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. His playing has variously been called “compelling and moving,” “magnificent and revelatory,” and “bold, imaginative, and amazingly accurate.”

Sykes will perform works by Georg Böhm, Heinrich Scheidemann, Dieterich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach on a harpsichord made by Allan Winkler after Fleischer (Hamburg, 1716).

About The Jean C. Wilson Music Series:

The Jean C. Wilson Music Series is named for one of the founders and the director of the music series for 27 years. Now, under the auspices of the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Music Committee, the Music Series typically offers three concerts held during the first three months of the year.

Come to the First Religious Society in Newburyport and enjoy and experience their 86th annual Christmas Candlelight Service on Sunday, December 18, at 7:15 pm.

This traditional carol service will feature music from three choirs, a brass ensemble, and the newly restored pipe organ.

The congregation will sing such old favorites as “O Come, all ye faithful,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” and “Joy to the World,” and the choirs will sing a mix of traditional and new works from around the world, including carols from France, England, Germany and Spain.

Rowley’s 10th annual “Some Like it Hot!” Chili Cookoff will be held Saturday, November 5th from 5:30 to 8:p0 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Main Street (Route 1A), Rowley.

Chili lovers can look forward to sampling 20 or so versions of this tasty delight judged by 5 local celebrities. Admission includes cornbread, veggies, hot dogs, dessert and the featured item; varied chili recipes including red, green, meat and vegetarian options.

The First Religious Society in Newburyport opens its beautiful sanctuary at 8:00 pm for a Jazz Music Vespers Service Wednesday, November 2.

November Vespers occurs at Mid-Autumn, the season when ancient people celebrated the brightness of the moon in the time of increasing night.

The Jazz Vespers house band will be directed by Susan Creamer on piano. Sue attended the Berklee College of Music and has performed her original works at various venues in the U.S. and in Mexico.

Special guest will be Albert Lamar on flute, saxophone and recorder. Albert is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and has played at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, as well as with orchestras for Ray Charles, The Chieftains, Pete Fountain, Doc Severinson, and Makoto Ozone.

Reader Cyd Raschke’s selections will complement the music in paying homage to seasonal celebrations of moonlight and night.

This event is open to all.

Bruins hockey legends team up against local high school students and community leaders in unique fundraising game

Boston Bruins hockey fervor continues on the North Shore! The community is invited to be a part of local hockey history when Boston Bruins alumni legends, including Bruins all-time great Ray Bourque, Rick Middleton, Terry O’Reilly and others, take the ice for an exhibition game against area high school hockey players and other local residents.

Bruins Skate for Nate, a fundraiser to support the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund, will be held Saturday, October 29^th, 2011, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at The Governor’s Academy Whiston-Bragdon Arena in Byfield.

Bruins Skate for Nate will offer fun for the whole family. General admission tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for students under 18; kids under 6 are free. Attendees will receive an official Boston Bruins Alumni Team/Skate for Nate commemorative program book featuring Bruins team member photos.

Raffle prizes, including UNH hockey game tickets (including Frozen Fenway 2012) and a weeklong getaway to St. Thomas, and a 50/50 Chuck-a-Puck contest will be a part of the event; refreshments will be available for sale.

Local High School Hockey Teams to Play, Raise Funds

To make Bruins Skate for Nate a success, hockey teams from Amesbury, Newburyport, Pentucket, and Triton high schools have set aside their “river rivalry” to come together to support the event. Each school’s varsity hockey team will provide a player to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to form a line and play against the Boston Bruins Alumni legends.

In addition, the students are holding fundraisers to help support the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund, including selling ad space in the official game program book to local businesses.

“The high school hockey teams and their coaches have really stepped up to support Bruins Skate for Nate–we couldn’t do this without them,” says Newbury resident Ralph Cox, a 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team member and two-time collegiate All-American. “Their enthusiasm for the event and theircompassion for Nate, who is a longtime ice and street hockey enthusiast, is truly inspiring. It will be a thrill for all of us to see them play against some of the best hockey players of a generation on October 29^th.”

 In addition to high school students, local community members, and police and firefighters will fill hockey game line positions against the Bruins Alumni Team. Four lines of five positions each will be announced in the coming weeks.

 About the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund
Proceeds from Bruins Skate for Nate will support ongoing rehabilitative care for Nate Bibaud, 27, an Amesbury native and hockey enthusiast who sustained a serious spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the chest down last December while working in St. Croix, USVI. Through hard work, Nate is making encouraging strides, but his intensive daily therapy is expensive and not covered by health insurance.

Bruins Skate for Nate is coordinated by a volunteer group of Newburyport-area businessmen and women who each contribute their own unique skills and talents as well as their time. Come to an autumn afternoon concert on Sunday, October 30th at The First Religious Society in Newburyport and enjoy beautiful choral music from the 18th century as the works of Haydn And Handel are performed by the Candlelight Chorale of Newburyport.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Little Organ Mass” is a gem of the Classical choral tradition, with beautiful choral sounds and an ornate organ solo, to be played on a handmade continuo organ now on loan to the church from A. David Moore.

George Fredric Handel’s “O Praise the Lord” is a longer work for chamber choir, soloists, string trio and oboe. Those who love Handel’s “Messiah” may be pleasantly surprised to discover this charming piece, one of Handel’s famous “Chandos Anthems.”

The concert will be performed on Sunday, October 30 at 4:00 p.m. The First Religious Society, UU, is located at 26 Pleasant Street in Newburyport. Handicapped accessible, convenient adjacent parking.

The Amesbury Sports Park will be hosting the 5th Annual Brew Feston Saturday, September 24, from 12:00 to 8:30 pm. at its facility at 12 South Hunt Road in Amesbury MA.

The Brew Fest, sponsored by Dos Equis, will feature a plethora of microbrews, barbecue, OGO (Outdoor Gravity Orb) and summer tubing rides and music by 6 live bands on an outdoor stage.

The Park’s Brew Fest attracted nearly 2,200 people last year, and they are expecting north of 4,500 people to attend the all day event this year.

The Amesbury Sports Park has partnered with Merrimack Valley Distributors who will be showcasing their entire portfolio of microbrews including:

• Ithaca Cascazilla
• New Castle Werewolf
• Wolavers Pumpkin.

Many of the distributor’s brewers are attending the event and will be available to discuss the history, brewing processes, and subtle nuances of their favorite brews.

While the focus of the Brew Fest is on craft brews, there will be a handful of more mainstream beers like Coors Light for the slightly less adventurous.

Music

Local favorites and headlining band, The Brew, will be celebrating the release of their latest CD at the Brew Fest.

Other bands performing include: Michael Bernier & The Uprising, Nerve 8, The Romano Project, Sunchunck and more.

OGO Rides & Summer Tubing

In addition to the beer, BBQ and bands, the Brew Fest will feature OGO rides and summer tubing. The OGO (Outdoor Gravity Orb) is an 11 foot inflatable transparent sphere with another inflated sphere suspended inside it. Riders enter the orb and strap themselves into a harness, or enter the H2OGO with up to 3 people and 5 gallons of water and are pushed over the edge of an 800 foot grassy slope.

Tickets: Tickets for admission are just $11 and are available in advance online at the Amesbury Sports Park website or at the door on the day of the event.

Once inside the gate, guests may purchase ten 3-oz. samples for $10. Full pints will be available at the draft truck.
