The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport is offering a Wednesday Evening Shore-Birding program from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on August 4th.

Join Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and Education Coordinator Dave Larson as they look for springtime birds during the quiet part of the day.

Location: Meet at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.

Fee: $8 for Mass Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

Pre-registration is not required.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

These very popular programs provide an excellent opportunity to explore one of the most productive birding areas in the country. To date, over 310 species of birds on these Wednesday field trips.

During this spring and summer, field trips explore birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus is on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County. When appropriate, we will adjust our itinerary to search for rarities reported in the area.

This program is ideal for birders of all skill levels. Preregistration is not necessary. Four-trip special: $36 members, $45 nonmembers. Trips need not be consecutive for special price.

Shorebirds Of Newburyport Harbor

Join Sue McGrath, of Newburyport Birders for an early morning search of shorebirds along the extensive mudflats of the Merrimack River which provide excellent feeding grounds for these migrants.

You’ll spend time at viewing sites along Water Street, Newburyport observing, appreciating and identifying these long range migrants. You’ll also learn about aids to field identification including habitat preference, feeding techniques and physical characteristics.

Bring beverage and a snack.

July Tern Colony Cruise To The Isles of Shoals

You’re invited to join New Hampshire Audubon on a two hour, early morning cruise to the Isles of Shoals on Saturday, July 24th from 7:00 to 9:00 am.

You’ll travel to the Isles of Shoals aboard Sue Reynolds ‘ “Uncle Oscar” to take a look at the tern colony on White and Seavey Islands.

With a total population of over 2000 breeding pairs of Common Terns, about 50-60 pairs of Roseate Terns and a dozen or so pairs of Arctic Terns, the Seavey Island colony is the only place in New England where you have a good chance of seeing Common, Arctic, and Roseate terns at the same time.

The boat will not land; rather, it’ll circle the islands so you can watch the terns and whatever else you might encounter such as Common Eiders, maybe some Black Guillemots, and perhaps some shorebirds.

Last year’s unexpected bonus was migrating phalaropes. Steve Mirick will be the onboard bird expert.

This is an early morning expedition: this trip will leave dockside in Rye Harbor promptly at 7:00am and return around 9:30am.

The Brookline Bird Club will be birding in the evening on Plum Island on Monday, July 12th. You’ll be looking for early-migrating shorebirds, saltmarsh and seaside sparrows, and the flocks of herons flying in to roost.

These trips are open to all and are free. If you’d like to go, meet them at Parking lot #1, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge at 5:30 pm.

You can observe the new baby osprey chicks on Plum Island that are located on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge with refuge staff  Tuesday to Thursday, July 6th to 8th, anytime between 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

Visit refuge staff on the Pines Trail to observe some of the refuge’s newest residents, baby osprey chicks. Refuge staff will be available to answer any questions you may have about these remarkable animals on the observation platform on the Pines Trail.

You will also have the chance to see the osprey interact with their young up close using the refuge’s scope and get to handle some interesting artifacts.

No registration is necessary, just stop by anytime between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.

If you want to broaden your birding horizons outside of Newburyport and explore a beautiful state park on the North Shore, join the Brooklinline Bird Club and the Trustees of Reservations, for a two hour walk at Halibut State Park, Rockport on Cape Ann on Sunday, June 20th.

Join them for a two-hour birding walk over easy to moderate trails in search of seasonal specialties. Beginners to birding are encouraged!
Boots are advisable!

Directions:
From Route 128 (Exit 9), take Route 127 north (Eastern Avenue) toward Rockport, 3 mi. At 5-way intersection, turn left onto Railroad Avenue (remains Route 127) and follow for 2.4 mi. Turn right onto Gott Avenue. The entrance is opposite the state park’s parking lot.

Meeting Place: Meet at the Park’s parking lot. 8:00 am.

Fall Birds of Plum Island

North Shore Community College is offering a three hour class, Fall Birds of Plum Island, on Sunday, September 12th at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island. The instructor for the class is Sue McGrath, President of the Essex County Ornithological Club and owner of  Newburyport Birders.

Bird watching at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island is exciting because it’s a world famous, productive site.

Learn to appreciate the world of birds!
During this three-hour class, you’ll learn about birds in an “outdoor classroom”.

This class will provide new birders with the aids needed to begin bird identification ~ special characteristics, bird behavior and habitat preferences. The class will focus on bird identification techniques.

You’ll be walking over gentle terrain at a slow pace. Sturdy footwear is necessary along with a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, hat, insect repellent and sunscreen.
Bring a snack and a beverage. Class fee includes interpretive materials.
