The Keynote Speaker will be Michael L. Dawson of the MFS Speakers’ Bureau. Guest Emcee is Joan Miller of the Amesbury Educational Foundation Inc.

The Book Rack Book Store, Newburyport is hosting a Launch Party for “West Newbury: Images of America” on Friday. December 16th from 6-9 pm. You are invited to attend the launch party as the Book Rack celebrates the release of the newest Images of America Series: “West Newbury” with authors Susan Poore Follansbee and Jane Wallace Wild.

West Newbury was incorporated in 1819 after breaking away from the early settlement of Newbury, which was founded in 1635 by English livestock investors. From its very beginning, the town was a small farming community, later boasting many orchards, nurseries, and truck farms.

Susan Poore Follansbee, a descendant of the first settlers of Newbury, is the author of a comprehensive book on West Newbury’s cemeteries.

Jane Wallace Wild, a native of Ipswich and longtime resident of West Newbury, is a professional title examiner with a
focus on historical research; she is married to a descendant of one of Newbury’s first settlers.

Nock Middle School Students In Newburyport Trained to Help Peers Resolve Conflict By North Shore Community Mediation Center

Two weeks ago, thanks to the generous support of People’s United Bank and a private donor, an exemplary group of 18 7th and 8th graders from Newburyport’s Nock Middle School became the district’s newest group of trained peer mediators.

Peer mediation is a voluntary, confidential way for students to resolve conflicts and improve relationships and has become increasingly widespread as an integral part of the broader effort to cultivate a culture of peace and safety in schools. These students participated in a 20-hour training led by members of North Shore Community Mediation Center (NSCMC).

The intensive training included lessons on active listening, overcoming biases, trust building, problem-solving, and using the formal mediation process found in courts and schools across the country. Through numerous role-plays, group discussions, and activities, the students came to understand their role as neutral listeners who don’t determine the outcome or decide who is right or wrong. They practiced the delicate art of effective open-ended questioning and explored the impact of conflict in their own lives, identifying different conflict styles and gaining constructive communication skills.

The North Shore Community Mediation Center (NSCMC) has been training groups of Nock Middle School students for the past two years. Ms. Fleming, the group’s advisor, hopes the program will continue to expand with increased awareness and understanding of how mediation works. These students join those at 22 other middle and high schools and two colleges in the North Shore area who have been trained by NSCMC and who serve as positive role models, standing against violence and bullying and standing for the principles of alternative dispute resolution.

The 13th Annual Amesbury Rotary Club Auction scheduled for November 10th from 6:00 to 10:00 pm at the Holy Family Parish Hall in Amesbury provides many opportunities for local businesses to get involved and to spotlight their business.

There will be both a live and silent auction so donate something and get lots of publicity. We have our mystery gift bags which are very popular. They are stuffed with logo items from various merchants as well as gift certificates, scratch tickets and more.

One bag has a $100 bill and one a $50. While we have 18 bags you do not need to donate 18 items. Have a discount coupon? We will put that in as well.

Rowley’s 10th annual “Some Like it Hot!” Chili Cookoff will be held Saturday, November 5th from 5:30 to 8:p0 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Main Street (Route 1A), Rowley.

Chili lovers can look forward to sampling 20 or so versions of this tasty delight judged by 5 local celebrities. Admission includes cornbread, veggies, hot dogs, dessert and the featured item; varied chili recipes including red, green, meat and vegetarian options.

Ipswich Ale, Stone Cat Ale, and Mercury soda will be available for purchase from our co-sponsor Mercury Brewing Company. A variety of red and white wines may also be purchased from our co-sponsor, Rowley Liquors.
