Join Sandy Point’s naturalist for an exploration of the 15,000 years of geological, biological and cultural history at Sandy Point. Find out what a drumlin is and why the one at Bar Head on Plum Island is important as we hike along the beach, culminating in a trip up the Drumlin Trail.
Where To Meet: Meet in the first parking lot.
Children of all ages are welcome but those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. This hike is approximately 1 hour in length.
All programs are free and open to the public. Parking is free, but space is limited.

There are aliens among us! While they may seem like they have always belonged here, many plant species are actually NOT native to this area and can do more harm than good (sometimes). This program will show you how to identify them, find out how they got here, and compare them to some of our native species.

Plum Island Beach Cleanup, Coastsweep 2010, Saturday, September 18th

PLUM ISLAND BEACH CLEANUP SEPTEMBER 18: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Coastsweep 2010 cleanup for Plum Island, including the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation, will be held on Saturday, September 18, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
David Larson, Education Coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, is looking for 100+ volunteers of all ages willing to help clean up trash and debris from the roads, trails, and beaches. Those interested are encouraged to bring friends, family, teachers, business colleagues, or students.
Volunteers do not need to pre-register to help with the cleanup, and may show up at any time during the day. Check-in is at the Refuge’s Parking Lot #1, where supplies will be provided by Mass Audubon staff. People are advised to bring their own work gloves.
Data about trash collected by volunteers will be entered into a database by the Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, D.C., for the purpose of tracking the sources of waste.
The Coastsweep cleanup will be held rain or shine.

STAR PARTY! Discover what’s in “The Sky Tonight!”
Join the Salisbury Beach State Reservation Park educator and members of the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Clubto find out which celestial bodies may be seen in the sky over Salisbury Beach on Saturday evening, September 4th.
Several Club members and their telescopes will be available to assist your viewing both with the naked eye and through telescopes. You’ll also learn about the moon, its phases and its effect on the tides, as well as how various cultures have historically related to the objects visible in the night sky.
All ages are welcome but children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Plum Island, 2010 Drive On Surf Fishing Program Changes

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (PRNWR) has made changes to its 2010 Drive On Surf Fishing Program as a result of significant beach erosion conditions on the refuge and to help protect the delicate dune habitat.
A total of 50 permits will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting on Monday, August 16th.
Drive On surf fishing will begin Wednesday, September 1st. Access will only be from Beach Buggy 1. A total of 1.5 miles of Refuge beach will be open for vehicles (from 0.5 to Mile Marker #2).
Due to unusually high tides, the beach will be closed to vehicles from September 8th to 10th and on October 8th and 9th. Other closures may result due to high winds and storms.
How To Obtain A Permit: Permits can be obtained only at the Refuge gatehouse. For more information, please contact Refuge Headquarters at 978-465-5753.
