Hampton Beach Web Cams
July 13, 2008
This is a nice web cam that provides a great scoping view of Hampton Beach and Boar’s Head. It is updated in real time as you watch. It’s even available online after dark. A great location for a webcam!
Note: You’ll have to use the Internet Explorer to view this web cam as the latest FireFox browser update has some compatibility issues with the web cam software.
This java based web cam provides a view of Hampton Beach from the Chamber of Commerce building on Ocean Boulevard located adjacent to the Sea Shell Stage. This web cam may take awhile to load and display a video or may be off-line from time-to-time. Sometimes the web cam appears to be off-line for long periods of time. If not online, try the La Bec Rouge web cam which operates very smoothly and is online almost all of the time.
Tips For Dealing With Rip Tides/Rip Currents
July 1, 2008
And you really know that summer is here when there are people actually swimming in the cold waters of our local beaches. That’s where we are now.
With the exception of last saturday’s abnormally raw weather, recent high temperatures and humidity levels have driven lots of people to the beaches and into the waters of our local beaches.
This is perhaps a good time to review the basics of rip tides which are also known as rip currents. An article by Patrick Cronin on Seacoastonline.com provides a good overview of what swimmers and anyone in the waters off of our beaches need to know about rip currents.
Rip tides are common on any beach and they are definitely present in beaches in the Greater Newburyport region depending on tidal and weather conditions.
Rip tides, which are responsible for killing more than 100 people each year as a result of drowning, are powerful, fast moving currents of water flowing away from the shoreline through a depression or constriction on the sea bottom. They are generally about 20 yards wide and may extend outwards of 70 yards into the ocean. To escape a rip tide, you must swim parallel to the shoreline until you can swim free of the moving stream of water. The major key is not to panic.
For more information and tips on how to recognize and deal with a rip tide, see the following article.
