PLUM ISLAND BEACH CLEANUP SEPTEMBER 17th - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Celebrate Healthy Coastline with Family Fun at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats

If you would like to help out Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge with this year’s Coastsweep 2011 cleanup of Plum Island, including the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation, male plans to visit the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, September 17th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Looking For 100+ Volunteers: David Larson, Education Coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats, is looking for 100+ volunteers of all ages willing to help clean up trash and debris from the roads, trails, and beaches. Those interested are encouraged to bring friends, family, teachers, or students.

In 2010, 203 volunteers picked up 4080 pounds of debris – everything from cigarette butts to an engine, a car grille, and a GI-Joe plastic seat.

Check-In: Check-in is at Parking Lot #1 on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Supplies will be provided by Mass Audubon staff. People are advised to bring their own work gloves.

Data about trash collected by volunteers will be entered into a database by the Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, D.C., for the purpose of tracking the sources of waste.

Coastsweep Carnival Free-for-All. Complementing this year’s Coastsweep, Joppa Flats Education Center will hold its first Coastsweep Carnival Free-for-All, a full day of family activities that celebrate the health of our coastline.

Before or after helping with Coastsweep, the public is invited to drop in at Joppa Flats, One Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, anytime from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm for live tide pool animal demonstrations, guided salt marsh walks, and interactive science activities.

Both Coastsweep and the Coastsweep Carnival Free-for-All are free, for all ages, and will be held rain or shine. Participants do not need to preregister and may show up at any time during the day.

Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island is offering a free program, Tidepool Explorers, on Tuesday, June 21st. The program is approximately an hour long.

Join Sandy Point’s park interpreter at Sandy Point State Reservation for an exploration of our expansive tide pools. Explore the wonders of the rocky intertidal zone at the foot of Bar Head Drumlin and learn about the creatures who call this dynamic environment home.

Children of all ages are welcome but those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center is offering a Parent/Child Walkabout on Friday, December 3rd to explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of Plum Island with an emphasis on the beach wrack-line, that area of the beach that contains the seaweed and other debris left on the beach by the last high tide.

You’ll explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of Plum Island in a fun, energetic format for families with children ages 3 to 6.

The walkabout will be led by Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings.

Location: Meet at parking lot #1 at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island.

Fee: $16. The fee covers one adult and one child.

Pre-registration is required. You must register to attend this event.

Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island is offering a free program, Just Dig It! The Clamming Experience!, on Monday, October 4th. The program is approximately 60 to 90 minutes long.

Learn about bivalves and where they live, and find out more about the history and economics of clamming in the area. Then PREPARE TO GET DIRTY as we dig down in the mud with a licensed clammer to unearth some of these two-shelled beauties!

Recommended: Wear rubber or muck boots, sunscreen and bug spray. Bring water to drink and a bucket to put your clams in. A limited number of clam rakes are available to lend/share for this program.

PLUM ISLAND BEACH CLEANUP SEPTEMBER 18: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The Coastsweep 2010 cleanup for Plum Island, including the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation, will be held on Saturday, September 18, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Join Sandy Point’s naturalist and discover this seldom-explored side of the Reservation as we hike along the Western trail bordered by the Refuge Salt Marsh and the dunes.
