Join Newburyport Birders for an afternoon of birding on the first day of the New Year 2011!

Salisbury Beach State Reservation is a wonderful, winter birding site.

At sunset, we’ll have light refreshments, do our summary and appreciate the night sky. Please bring a folding chair, dress warmly in layers and wear warm footwear.

This is a limited-participation program; so register early. All levels of birders are welcome.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Bill Gette, Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director and Dave Weaver, Birder’s Certificate Program graduate for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.

It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

The First Religious Society in Newburyport will be having its Christmas Eve Service on Saturday, December 24th at 5:00 pm.

This family-oriented service is appropriate for all ages. It features a story, traditional carols and readings, special music, and individual candle lighting. A free will offering will be taken at the conclusion of the service to support our Unitarian Partner Church in the Transylvanian region of Romania.

This event is free and open to the public.

Launch Party For “West Newbury: Images of America” At The Book Rack Bookstore, Newburyport, Friday, December 16th

The Book Rack Book Store, Newburyport is hosting a Launch Party for “West Newbury: Images of America” on Friday. December 16th from 6-9 pm. You are invited to attend the launch party as the Book Rack celebrates the release of the newest Images of America Series: “West Newbury” with authors Susan Poore Follansbee and Jane Wallace Wild.

West Newbury was incorporated in 1819 after breaking away from the early settlement of Newbury, which was founded in 1635 by English livestock investors. From its very beginning, the town was a small farming community, later boasting many orchards, nurseries, and truck farms.

Nock Middle School Students In Newburyport Trained to Help Peers Resolve Conflict By North Shore Community Mediation Center

Two weeks ago, thanks to the generous support of People’s United Bank and a private donor, an exemplary group of 18 7th and 8th graders from Newburyport’s Nock Middle School became the district’s newest group of trained peer mediators.

Peer mediation is a voluntary, confidential way for students to resolve conflicts and improve relationships and has become increasingly widespread as an integral part of the broader effort to cultivate a culture of peace and safety in schools. These students participated in a 20-hour training led by members of North Shore Community Mediation Center (NSCMC).

Before the domestication of animals, people had to hunt wild animals for food and fur. The skill of tracking animals effectively once ensured our survival, but now it is a lost art.

Today, all of the items we need to survive are only a few miles away. Join Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary Naturalist Scott Santino, a tracking enthusiast, to learn the basics of tracking our local mammals. We’ll talk about the life histories of mammals native to Massachusetts including rodents, carnivores, hoofed animals, and lagomorphs.
