‘Immigration Matters: Secure Communities’, At The First Religious Society, Newburyport, Wednesday, December 7th

Secure Communities is the federal program that supposedly identifies and deports both legal and illegal immigrants who have committed a serious crime. That sounds like a good idea, but the reality of the program has not matched the promise.

Lena Graber, a Fellow at the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild in Boston, will be the next speaker at the “Immigration Matters” Study Group on Wednesday December 7 from 7:00 to -8:00 pm at the  First Religious Society in Newburyport.

She will discuss this federal effort and explain to us how it is failing to accomplish its stated goals, while causing indiscriminate suffering on immigrant communities.

The program is free and open to the public.

Merrimack Valley Skating Club’s Annual Winter Figure Skating Exhibition and Family Skate At The Graf Rink, Newburyport, Sunday, December 4th

The Merrimack Valley Skating Club will be holding its Annual Winter Figure Skating Exhibition and Family Skate at the Graf Rink, Newburyport on Sunday, December 4th beginning at 4:00 pm.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come and watch area figure skaters perform their competitive programs and various routines to holiday music. There will be Family Skate after the last performance (approximately 5pm) for all of those in attendance for the Exhibition. Skate rentals for the Family Skate will be complimentary on behalf of the Graf Rink.

Admission: Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.

Seabirds Of Cape Ann, Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, Saturday, December 3rd

Where: Meet at the Fisherman’s Statue on Western Avenue in Gloucester, MA.

Late fall and winter are the best times of the year to bird along the rocky coast of Cape Ann. Both migrant and wintering seabirds can be observed at Halibut and Andrews points and in the shelter of the cape’s many coves

Join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center exploring Cape Ann to find sea ducks, loons, grebes, and gulls on Saturday, December 3rd on an all day field trip from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. The field trip will be led by Jane Mirick, Naturalist and Steve Mirick, author of  ”Birding the New Hampshire Seacoast“.

During this field trip, you’ll visit Halibut, Andrews, and Eastern points as well as Brace Cove, Niles Pond, and the Gloucester Harbor area. Target species will include the red-throated loon, red-necked grebe, harlequin duck, black guillemot (and maybe other alcids), and three species of scoters.

This all day field trips is for adults.

Fee: Adults $37.00 for members. $47.00 for non-members.

Location: Meet at the Fisherman’s Statue on Western Avenue in Gloucester, MA. Wear warm clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Bring binoculars, snacks, and a lunch.

It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

Salisbury Historical Society Holiday Open House And Annual Tree Lighting, Sunday, November 27th

The Amesbury Chamber of Commerce & Industrial Foundation invites you to welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus to town at the Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 3, 2011.

The parade theme this year is Friendship. The parade begins at 3:30 and will travel from Greenleaf Street, down Sparhawk Street to Main Street and into Market Square.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will join us in Market Square for caroling and the lighting of the Annual Holiday Tree.

Santa will then stroll over to The Provident Bank for their Annual Holiday Open House.

The Booster Clubs from the Newburyport and Amesbury High Schools are teaming up once again for their annual Thanksgiving food drive.

The Boosters will be collecting non-perishable food and supplies at the entrance of the Thanksgiving Day football game between Amesbury and Newburyport at World War Memorial Stadium.

All donations will be sent to the food pantries at the Salvation Army in Newburyport and the Pettengill House in Salisbury, MA.
