The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Bill Gette, Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director and Dave Weaver, Birder’s Certificate Program graduate for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.
It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

Learn what “SAVE THE LOWER GREEN” is all about and why it deserves your support — now!
The Board of Directors of the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport have joined with local preservation partners, Essex County Greenbelt Association and numerous other organizations in recognizing the campaign to preserve the Newbury Lower Green as a highly worthy mission for permanent historical preservation.
Further, the board encourages its museum members and friends to support this campaign to preserve the rural landscape and pastoral character of Newbury’s precious 17th century New England green, through the purchase of the 4-acre Newman Farm Meadow.
This preservation effort needs additional support from the community to push it over the top as the campaign enters its final month.

Celebrate Healthy Coastline with Family Fun at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats
If you would like to help out Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge with this year’s Coastsweep 2011 cleanup of Plum Island, including the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation, male plans to visit the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, September 17th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Looking For 100+ Volunteers: David Larson, Education Coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats, is looking for 100+ volunteers of all ages willing to help clean up trash and debris from the roads, trails, and beaches. Those interested are encouraged to bring friends, family, teachers, or students.
In 2010, 203 volunteers picked up 4080 pounds of debris – everything from cigarette butts to an engine, a car grille, and a GI-Joe plastic seat.

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, is offering an all-day, Introduction To Birdwatchingprogram on Sunday, September 4th.
Do you enjoy watching birds but want to improve your ability to identify them? This program will teach the basics of field identification, including physical characteristics, behavior, habitat, voice, and more.
Following the classroom presentation, we will help you to practice and integrate your identification skills during our field trip. Our low participant-to-naturalist ratio allows for lots of individualized attention as we work though the identification of a variety of species.
Early September is a great time to hone your skills in preparation for the waves of migrants soon to come!
