AN EVENING WITH THE EGRETS OF PLUM ISLAND

Join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette on a tour to see migrating shorebirds, with an emphasis on the evening flight of the thousands of egrets and herons that roost seasonally on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

During their postbreeding dispersal, thousands of egrets and herons move into the Plum Island estuary. By day, these waders feed in the salt marshes and on the mudflats. In the early evening, the herons and egrets join together in a communal roost.

The roost can contain several thousand birds including great and snowy egrets; great blue, little blue, and tricolored herons; black-crowned night-herons; and glossy ibises.
