Owls of the Salt Marshes and Forests

If you want to explore Newburyport and the surrounding area searching for owls, this field trip on Saturday, March 19th may be for you!

Join Alison O’Hare, a Joppa Flats Education Center Birder’s Certificate Program graduate and Bill Gette, Sanctuary Director of the Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, searching for diurnal and nocturnal owls in the Newbury/Rowley area, with a dinner and lecture break between afternoon and evening.

The program will start with a field trip to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge where we will search the salt marshes and dunes for the diurnal-hunting snowy owl and the crepuscular short-eared owl.

By about 6:30 pm we will return to Joppa Flats for a lecture about the place owls hold in folklore and literature and an in-depth discussion of the biology and natural history of North American owls.

We will conclude our program with a field trip to Newbury and Rowley to search for eastern screech-owls, barred owls, and great horned owls.

No preregistration required. Preregistration is not required. Runs most Saturdays. Please call ahead to confirm. Minimum age: 8 years. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.

An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.

The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.
