If you want to explore the local area and see the birds of the Greater Newburyport/Plum Island area, join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport program, on Saturday morning as they search for local avian activity in the region.
For beginners and birders of all skill levels.
Fee: Adults $10; Children ages 8 and up $7.
No preregistration required. Preregistration is not required. Runs most Saturdays. Please call ahead to confirm. Minimum age: 8 years. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee Sponsored Hikes
You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.
An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.
The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.

Do you love the outdoors and sharing nature with children? Are you interested in being a volunteer at Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport? If you do, become an education volunteer at Joppa Flats!
Throughout the school year, Joppa Flats staff and volunteers offer a wide range of coastal ecology and birding programs for children on-site at Joppa Flats, at schools, and in various wild habitats. To prepare its volunteers to assist with these quality programs, the Joppa Flats Education Center provide complete in-the-field training. You’ll learn a wide variety of hands-on activities and experiments pertaining to levels of questioning, learning modalities, and using objects in nature to practice science.
Join the Center’s crew of trained naturalists and help Mass Audubon with our mission to increase awareness and inspire stewardship of the natural world. The training sessions will be led by Lisa Hutchings, Teacher-Naturalist for the Joppa Flats Education Center.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

Newburyport Birder’s Adopt-A-Gourd Program For Purple Martins On Plum Island, Newbury/Newburyport

ADOPT-A-GOURD PROGRAM 2011
You can help support the purple martin population that breeds on Plum Island by participating in Newburyport Birder’s Adopt-A-Gourd program. You can adopt one or more Purple Martin gourds for the 2011 breeding season.
The purple martins at Plum Island have been studied and monitored for years. Adoption fees are $40/gourd.
With each adoption of a Purple Martin gourd for the 2011 breeding season, you will receive:
- Photo of your gourd
- As the season progresses, updates on breeding biology at the colony ~ nest building, egg laying, hatching and fledgling activities,
- A final tally of the colony’s reproductive success,
- An invitation to renew your adoption the following year.
