The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee Sponsored Hikes

You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.

An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.

The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.

Salisbury Fall Rail Trail Cleanup

The Coastal Trails Coalition (CTC) will be holding a Salisbury Rail Trail Fall clean up on  Saturday, November 20th from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.

If you would like to join them and help with the trail cleanup, you can meet them at one of the following locations:

  • Lion’s Park by the Ghost Trail (behind the Fire Department on Route 1 North)
  • Friedenfels Road parking area (off Bridge Road, Route 1) by the Marsh Trail

If you want to explore the local area and see the birds of the Greater Newburyport/Plum Island area, join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport program, on Saturday morning as they search for local avian activity in the region.

For beginners and birders of all skill levels.

Fee: Adults $10; Children ages 8 and up $7.

No preregistration required. Preregistration is not required. Runs most Saturdays. Please call ahead to confirm. Minimum age: 8 years. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

Newburyport Youth Hockey Learn to Skate Program, Graf Rink, Newburyport

The Newburyport Youth Hockey League’s  Learn to Skate Program is continuing to register children (ages 3-9) on a limited basis for its program on Sunday mornings before the class at 9:30.

The program runs for 20 weeks at a cost of $125 ($200 for two). Lessons run through the end of February.

Winter Waterfowl of Cape Ann – Free Lecture

Cape Ann is a wonderful place to observe waterfowl. Many species of ducks and geese migrate past the cape during their spring and fall migrations. Thousands of these birds stop on the cape to feed, rest, and seek shelter from the intense winter storms.

On Thursday, November 18th, Bill Gette, Sanctuary Director of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport will present a free lecture and presentation on the winter waterfowl of Cape Ann at the Sawyer Free Libray in Gloucester at 7:00 pm.

Sponsored by The Gloucester Adventure, Inc.,  Mr. Gette’s lecture will show photographs of these hardy birds, discuss their feeding strategies, and review aids to field identification. He will also discuss each species’ habitat preference and offer suggestions as to when and where to look for each species.
