You’re invited to join local photographer and author Andrew Martinez at the Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport on Sunday, December 5th for a talk and book signing for his fourth edition of Marine Life of the North Atlantic: Canada to Cape May.
The revised edition of his book contains more than 200 new photographs and extended natural history notes.

Late fall and winter are the best times of the year to bird along the rocky coast of Cape Ann. Both migrant and wintering seabirds can be observed at Halibut and Andrews points and in the shelter of the cape’s many coves
Join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Centerexploring Cape Ann to find sea ducks, loons, grebes, and gulls on Saturday, December 4th on an all day field trip from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. The field trip will be led by Dave Larsen, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center Coordinator.
During this field trip, you’ll visit Halibut, Andrews, and Eastern points as well as Brace Cove, Niles Pond, and the Gloucester Harbor area. Target species will include the red-throated loon, red-necked grebe, harlequin duck, black guillemot (and maybe other alcids), and three species of scoters.
This all day field trips is for adults.
Fee: Adults $35.00 for members. $45.00 for non-members.
Location: Meet at the Fisherman’s Statue on Western Avenue in Gloucester, MA.

Wreath-Making Workshop, Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Wednesday, December 1st

Have you ever wanted to make your own wreath with your personal touches, but weren’t sure where to start?
If you would like to learn how to make a wreath, register for the wreath-making workshop at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Wednesday, December 1st. The two-hour workshop will be led by Susie Talbot, of Forget-Me-Not Garden Services. She will guide participants through putting together and decorating a 20″ wreath.
Wreaths, different styles of ribbons, dried and live fruits, and an assortment of accent greens will be provided so the wreath you take home will reflect you. Should you have a unique item you wish to use on your wreath, please bring it. We would also appreciate it if you have your own clippers or scissors if you brought them along.

Where: Meet at Parking Lot #1 at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island.
Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center is offering a Parent/Child Walkabout on Friday, December 3rd to explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of Plum Island with an emphasis on the beach wrack-line, that area of the beach that contains the seaweed and other debris left on the beach by the last high tide.
You’ll explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of Plum Island in a fun, energetic format for families with children ages 3 to 6.
The walkabout will be led by Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings.

If you want to explore the local area and see the birds of the Greater Newburyport/Plum Island area, join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport program, on Saturday morning as they search for local avian activity in the region.
For beginners and birders of all skill levels.
Fee: Adults $10; Children ages 8 and up $7.
No preregistration required. Preregistration is not required. Runs most Saturdays. Please call ahead to confirm. Minimum age: 8 years. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee Sponsored Hikes
You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.
An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.
The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.
