4th Annual Golf Extravaganza, First Congregational Church of Georgetown, Sunday October 24th

When: Sunday, October 24th 2010. Tee-off time is at 12:00 pm (noon)
Where: Far Corners Golf Course, 778 Main Street, West Boxford, MA

If you want to participate in a late fall golf tournament, the First Congregational Church of Georgetown will be hosting its fourth annual Golf Extravaganza on Sunday, October 24th  at Far Corners Golf Coursein Boxford, MA.

All are welcome to this event, which will benefit the church and its missions. Prizes will be awarded for lowest team score, closest to the pin and longest drive.

Tee-off Time: Tee-off time will be at 12:00 pm (noon).

Cost: The cost is $125 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, cart and a barbecue.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

The Cider Mash 5K Trail Run

This is a true cross-country trail run! The race starts and finishes at Cider Hill Farm, Amesbury.

If you like to get dirty and challenge yourself with hills, mud and water, then you don’t want to miss this race! This is great race for first time runners and seasoned runners looking for a more interesting 5K. With lots of hills and apples to jump over, this race has been proven to be one of the toughest.

The Race will go on rain or shine. It is up to the race director if the race will be cancelled or moved due to damaging weather.

A portion of the proceeds from the event are donated to the Amesbury Educational Foundation.

At the finish, runners will be rewarded with cider hill donuts and apples. Awards and prizes will be given to overall winners male & female.

Another great event for clam chowder lovers on the North Shore!

The Essex Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commercewill sponsor the 28th annual Essex ClamFest from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Park in Essex on Saturday, October 23rd.

The highlight of the day is the Clam Chowder Tasting contest, a competition that pits area restaurants against one another to determine who serves the best chowder on Cape Ann.

Several local restaurants will be serving up their favorite chowder recipes starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 2:00 p.m.

The chowder will be judged by Legal Seafoods President & CEO Roger Berkowitz, Senator Bruce Tarr, Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Essex Town Selectman Jeff Jones, Chamber President Kathy Low, Amy Harnois of TD Bank and local personality Ed Collard. The public will also have the opportunity to sample and vote on their favorite chowder.

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center new after-school program, Outdoor Safaris, for children ages 9 to 11 years old, continues on Wednesday, October 20th from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm at the Joppa Flats Education Center, rain or shine, with a focus on Tide Pools.

Children in the program will play out the roles of geologists, chemists, and biologists throughout this new series with Joppa Flats Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings.

The outdoor explorations for each safari will start off with a group game to burn off some steam, followed by new and exciting experiences in a coastal setting. Children will explore, observe, investigate, and compare the inhabitants, their adaptations, and the changes these organisms undergo in autumn.

Parent volunteer drivers may be needed. Parents are welcome, but they are not required to stay.

Chili lovers can look forward to sampling 20 or so versions of this tasty delight judged by 5 local celebrities. Admission includes cornbread, veggies, hot dogs, dessert and the featured item; varied chili recipes including red, green, meat and vegetarian options.

Rally To Restore Sanity Newburyport

On Saturday, October 30th, residents from Greater Newburyport, the Merrimack Valley and the Greater North Shore can join the “Rally to Restore Sanity” sponsored by Comedy Central’s TV personality Jon Stewart, without traveling further than downtown Newburyport.

Local residents are working together to stage a “Satellite Rally” in Brown Square and City Hall in conjunction with the rally on the National Mall sponsored by the Daily Show’s host. Events are scheduled to begin at Brown Square at 10:30 AM.
