If you want to explore the local area and see the birds of the Greater Newburyport/Plum Island area, join Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport program, on Saturday morning, September 25th as they search for local avian activity in the region.

For beginners and birders of all skill levels.

Fee: Adults $10; Children ages 8 and up $7.

No preregistration required. Preregistration is not required. Runs most Saturdays. Please call ahead to confirm. Minimum age: 8 years. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

Each week we are continually amazed at how many activities and events occur throughout the Greater Newburyport and surrounding North Shore, Seacoast and Cape Ann regions. Weekends offer even more choices and selections to consider. If only we could find a way to clone ourselves so that we could attend more of these events!

Here is our guide to some of the featured events to explore this weekend, Friday, September 24th through Sunday, September 26th.

1. Ipswich Lions Chowderfest 2010, Ipswich Riverwalk, Saturday, September 25th from 12:00 pm (Noon) to 3:00 pm

Don’t know about you, but we can never turn away from an opportunity to attend a local chowderfest. On Saturday, September 25th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. crowds will once again gather at the historic Riverwalk in Ipswich (EBSCO parking lot) for the 2010 Ipswich Lions Chowderfest.

Ipswich Chowder Fest!If you’re always looking forward to regional food, wine, and beer & ale tastings, make sure that you add the annual Ipswich Chowderfest to your calendar and sample some of the best local chowders made with local Ipswich and Essex shellfish!

Folks on the North Shore and beyond flock to Ipswich for its famous fried clams, seafood and of course delectable clam chowder. What better way to enter the Fall season than with an opportunity to, not only sample some of the best chowder around, but also become judge for a day?

Those attending pay a small fee to taste chowders from local restaurants and then vote for their favorites. About a dozen local restaurants serve up their best chowder to hundreds of hungry participants at an event that has become a North Shore tradition.

Sponsored by the Ipswich Lions Club, all proceeds are donated to local charities such as high school scholarships, programs for seniors, and the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Foundation.

Beyond The Beach, Sandy Point State Reservation, Plum Island, Thursday, September 23rd

Where: Sandy Point State Reservation, Plum Island, MA (meet in second Parking Lot)

Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island is offering a free program, Beyond the Beach, on Thursday, September 23rd. The program is approximately 60 to 90 minutes long.

There’s more to Sandy Point than just tidepools, sand and sea! Join Sandy Point’s naturalist and discover this seldom-explored side of the Reservation as we hike along the Western trail bordered by the Refuge Salt Marsh and the dunes. We will focus on the ecology and geology of this part of the Reservation.

Children of all ages are welcome but those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. This hike is approximately 1 hour in length.

Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island is offering a free, one hour program, Bar Head Hike, on Wednesday, September 22nd.

Join Sandy Point’s naturalist for an exploration of the 15,000 years of geological, biological and cultural history at Sandy Point. Find out what a drumlin is and why the one at Bar Head on Plum Island is important as we hike along the beach, culminating in a trip up the Drumlin Trail.

Salvation Army2010 Holiday Program Offered By Salvation Army of Newburyport

The Salvation Army, Newburyport offers a Holiday Program for Newbury, West Newbury and Newburyport families in need at its 40 Water St. location in Newburyport.

Families who demonstrate a need can sign up for the program during the following dates:

  • For Thanksgiving ONLY: sign up from October 1st to October 30th
  • For Thanksgiving and Christmas DINNER ONLY: sign up from October 1st to October 30th
  • For Christmas ONLY (food and/or gifts): sign up from October 1st to November 12th (firm date).

If you need a Thanksgiving dinner, please sign up in October.

Families must provide the following when signing up:

  • ID for address
  • Documentation (health cards/ss cards) for household members
  • Documentation of household income.

Note: While other programs are offered at Community Services of Newburyport and in other communities, families may sign up for only ONE program.

There are aliens among us! While they may seem like they have always belonged here, many plant species are actually NOT native to this area and can do more harm than good (sometimes). This program will show you how to identify them, find out how they got here, and compare them to some of our native species.

Sunday Pianist Needed For Salvation Army, Newburyport

An hour would be required to play preliminary music, hymns and other worship music.

After-School Outdoor Safaris: Mudflats, Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, Wednesday, September 22nd

AFTER-SCHOOL OUTDOOR SAFARI: MUDFLATS

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport is offering a new after-school program, Outdoor Safaris, for children ages 9 to 11 years. Children in the program will play out the roles of geologists, chemists, and biologists throughout this new series with Joppa Flats Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings.

The program consists of four safaris:

  • Wednesday, September 22nd: Mudflats Safari
  • Wednesday, October 20th: Tide Pool Safari
  • Wednesday, November 3rd: Salt Marsh Safari
  • Wednesday, December 8th: Sand Dune Safari

The outdoor explorations for each safari will start off with a group game to burn off some steam, followed by new and exciting experiences in a coastal setting. Children will explore, observe, investigate, and compare the inhabitants, their adaptations, and the changes these organisms undergo in autumn.
