The 53rd Yankee Homecoming Celebration, an annual Newburyport tradition, begins on Sunday, July 25th and runs through Sunday, August 1st.

Yankee Homecoming Events Scheduled for Monday, July 26th 2010

  • 8:00 am: Golf Tournament, Ould Newbury Country Club
  • 10:00 am to 11:30/Noon: Heritage Tours: African Americans in the Newburyport 1800s. The walking tour begins and ends at Brown Square, across from City Hall on Pleasant Street.
  • 10:30 am to 12:30 pm: Heritage Tours: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers, meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park
  • Noon to 3:00 pm: Kids Talent Showcase at Market Landing Park, Newburyport waterfront
  • 2:30 to 4:30 pm: Heritage Tours: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers, meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park

The new series PortMedia Classics debuts Yankee Homecoming week in Newburyport with several events from the past 25 years.

Hosted by Wally Thurlow, PortMedia Classics (PMC)  features the programs created by Newburyporters through cable access beginning in the early 1980s.

Thurlow has spent the summer digitizing archived videotapes at PortMedia to create the series, which will become a staple on Channel 10 – Newburyport’s public access channel on the Comcast cable system.

Lance Bryant Quintet, Maudslay Arts Center Summer Concert Series, Newburyport, Saturday, July 24th

The summer season at Newburyport’s premiere outdoor venue, the Maudslay Arts Center, continues on Saturday, July 24th with a performance by the Lance Bryant Quintet.

Lance Bryant, who also composes and arranges, comes out of Markham, Illinois, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he studied saxophone and, composition and arranging. Lance fostered musical relationships with fellow classmates, saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Greg Osby, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Cyrus Chestnut and other renowned musicians.

After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s, Lance continued his education, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society.

Annual Lighthouses Of Cape Ann Cruise, Gloucester, Friday, July 30th

Where: Cape Ann Whale Watch, 415 Main Street, Gloucester, MA

Want to see the five lighthouses of Cape Ann from the water and help support the Thacher Island Association?

On Friday, July 30th the association will be having its Annual Lighthouses of Cape Ann Cruise, leaving at 6:00 p.m. from Cape Ann Whale Watch in Gloucester aboard the Hurricane II.

Jeremy D’Entremont, lighthouse expert and author, will narrate the sunset cruise around Cape Ann to see the following five lighthouses. This is your chance to see the following lighthouses:

  • Thacher Island’s Twin Lighthouses
  • Annisquam Light
  • Ten Pound Island Light
  • Eastern Point Light.

Proceeds from the cruise benefit the Thacher Island Association, which is raising money for a new boat to bring visitors to and from the island.

Cash bar, sandwiches and snacks available or bring your own. (Note: No liquor may be brought on board)

The boat leaves promptly at 6:00 pm from the Cape Ann Whale Watch docks on Main St.in Gloucester.
and returns at 9:00 pm.

Cost: Donation is $30.00 per person.

You can take a 90-minute guided walking tour of Newburyport’s recently opened Clipper City Rail Trail on Sunday, July 25th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. The 1.1 mile trail is fully paved and includes a new 85-foot pedestrian bridge has over Low Street, Newburyport. The trail runs from the Newburyport Commuter Rail Station (MBTA) to the Merrimack River.

While walking along and exploring the Clipper City Rail Trail, you’ll enjoy learning about Newburyport’s history:
