Yankee Homecoming Events Scheduled for Friday, July 30th 2010
- 9:00 am to 4:00 pm: Heritage Tours: Piel Craftsmen, 3½ Center Street across from Ten Center Street restaurant. Established over 50 years ago, Piel Craftsmen have produced over 20,000 ship models. Over the years craftsmen have also restored thousands of ship model wrecks to their original condition. Come visit and talk to staff and learn about the history of building ship models including the 1800s clipper ships, schooners, and whaling ships.
- 10:00 am to 11:00 am: Heritage Tours: Old Hill Burying Ground Gravestone Restoration Project. Meet on Greenleaf Street behind Bartlet Mall. Learn about the current gravestone restoration project and see the process of the repair and restoration of leaning, fallen, and broken stones. Visit gravesites of African Americans, clockmakers, and the author of The Relic of the Revolution.
- 10:30 am to 12:30pm and 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.
- 7:30 to 9:00pm: Waterfront Concert Series, ENTRAIN, the eclectic Martha’s Vineyard-based six-piece band, Waterfront Stage, Newburyport.

- 10:00 am to Noon: Heritage Tours: The Cemetery Crawl- Meet on Hill Street at Highland Cemetery. Bronson DeStadler will be leading the St. Paul’s Graveyard tour. Tour begins at Highland Cemetery and you can say hello to a writer, a shipbuilder, and the first mayor of Newburyport. The next stop is across the street at Old Hill Burying Ground to visit gravesites of clockmakers, one of the first bridge builders in the United States, and African Americans. The tour concludes at St. Paul’s Graveyard where you’ll hear about the history of St. Anna’s Chapel and some well known Newburyport citizens.
- 10:00 am to 2:00 pm: Coast Guard Open House, Coast Guard Station, 65B Water Street, Newburyport.
Tours of the station and the boats in the yard will be conducted free of charge. Bring your children. - 10:30 am to 12:30pm: Yankee Homecoming Historical Tours By Ralph Ayers. Meet at Information Booth, Waterfront Park.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport is offering a Wednesday Evening Shore-Birding program from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on August 4th.
Join Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and Education Coordinator Dave Larson as they look for springtime birds during the quiet part of the day.
Location: Meet at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.
Fee: $8 for Mass Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

Isles of Shoals Adventure by Kayak, Joppa Flats Education Center and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, Sunday, August 1st

On Sunday, August 1st, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport, are offering an all day kayaking trip to the Isles of Shoals for experienced kayakers.
The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 12 miles off the New Hampshire/Maine coast. It is a great area to explore by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the wildlife on and around these Isles from your kayak.
The all day trip, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, includes a shuttle out to the Isles of Shoals from Newburyport, and on-deck barbecue lunch.
You’ll cruise from downtown Newburyport to the Isles of Shoals aboard the 48-foot cabin cruiser, the Erica Lee II. The Isles are located approximately 12 miles off the New England coast and are partly in New Hampshire and partly in Maine. They have a rich human history (both famous and infamous) and are a spectacular site for observing natural history.
Upon arrival at the Isles, participants can choose to paddle around the mothership in Gosport Harbor or head over to Smuttynose Island or to Star Island for ice cream. For the more adventurous, there will be a guided paddle to White Island or Lunging Island, depending on the conditions.
The price includes an on-deck barbeque lunch. Subtract $20 per person for double kayak rental. There is no discount if you use your own kayak. Experience Level: Intermediate III (some experience required; stamina necessary).
Paddling time: 5 hours with a 45-minute break and 1 hour for lunch.
Buffett Beach Blast At Salisbury Beach, Wednesday, July 28th

If you want to add to your summer beach experience, the Blue Ocean Music Hall on Salisbury Beach is having a Buffett Beach Blast on Wednesday evening, July 28th. with a tailgate party followed by a show by the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, Changes in Latitudes.
Tickets: Tailgate Party – $15 per car (Note: the Tailgate Party is optional; you can go the Show at 8:00 pm for $25 without going to the Tailgate Party.)
Proceeds from the event to benefit the free summer concert & fireworks series at Salisbury Beach.
