History Of The ABCFM: On June 29, 1810, a meeting was held at First Church of Christ to form the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). The ABCFM was organized by the General Association of Congregational Churches of Massachusetts “for the purpose of devising ways and means, and adopting and prosecuting measures, for promoting the spread of the gospel in Heathen lands.” The first missionaries sailed for Calcutta in 1812 and since that date, thousands of regularly appointed missionaries and shorter-term workers have been sent with the Board’s sponsorship and support.
The Celebration: As did our predecessors for the 100th anniversary in 1910 when the monument on Bradford Common was erected and dedicated, First Church of Christ will celebrate the 200th anniversary of this historic and monumental event on June 27, 2010.
On this day, we will not only celebrate the history of mission, but also the commitment to and the future of mission in our community and in the world with a celebration in worship followed by a rededication ceremony of the monument on Bradford Common.
The proceeds from the concert will further enable First Church of Christ in their commitment to the future mission in our community and worldwide.
