Kidleidoscope Pre-Schooler Program, Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, Wednesday, June 2nd

You and your pre-schooler(s) are invited to join the staff of Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, for the Kidleidoscope Program from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

Each week the Kidleidoscope program will introduce your pre-schooler to a new topic about nature in a three-part program that includes:

  • a story
  • a craft and
  • an activity (that includes outdoor exploration).

Each program lasts about an hour.

Where To Meet:

Meet at the Park headquarters building on 74 Curzon Mill Road.
This program is for ages 3 to 6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Evening Stroll, Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, Tuesday, June 1st

Where: Maudslay State Park, 74 Curzon Mill Road, Newburyport, MA

Join the Maudslay State Park park interpreter for a slow paced leisurely walk to view different areas of the park and experience various interpretations. The Tuesday evening stroll is a great way to get a more informed view of what is in the park and its history.

Meet at the headquarters building on 74 Curzon Mill Road. A different trail is taken every week so by the end of the summer, you will have walked the entire park!

Please bring bug spray and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Maudslay State Park, the former Moseley family estate on the Merrimack River, is one of the jewels of the Greater Newburyport region. The 480-acre park offers commanding views of the Merrimack River and features 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pines, and one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts.

It’s a great place for walking, biking, horseback riding and informal picnics. The parking fee for the park is $2.00.

Note: An adult must accompany children 12 and under.

2nd Annual Make Way For Molly Pan Mass Challenge Fundraiser

If you want to enjoy a fun night of dancing, food, entertainment, a silent auction and raffles, and also help raise money in the fight against cancer at the same time, plan on attending the Second Annual Make Way For Molly PMC Fundraiserat the Elks Lodge, Newburyport on Friday evening, June 4th.

Fundraiser for Molly Callahan

The event is being hosted by the Barlow family of Newburyport and many of their friends to help raise money to support the fight to eradicate cancer.

The goal of the fundraiser is to raise money for children and adults fighting cancer, to celebrate those who have conquered the disease and honor the memory of those who have not.

The Barlow’s niece, Molly, was diagnosed when she was 10 years old with leukemia. She is now 14, a freshman at Pingree, and is in remission due to the outstanding care and treatment she received at Children’s Hospital and the Jimmy Fund Clinic.

Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee Sponsored Hikes

You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.

An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.

The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.

North Shore Community College is offering a Birds of Plum Island class at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport on Saturday, June 5th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The instructor for the class is Sue McGrath, President of the Essex County Ornithological Club and owner of Newburyport Birders. Sue will help you learn how to watch birds.

Program Description

During this four-hour class, students will learn about birds and their habitats in an “outdoor classroom”.

This class will provide new birders with the aids needed to begin bird identification ~ special characteristics, bird behavior, habitat preference and bird vocalization.

You”ll observe the birds at this world famous, productive, birdwatching site. The class will focus on observing bird behavior and on bird identification techniques.

The 32nd Annual Salisbury 5-Mile Beach Lifeguard Race will be held earlier this year to coincide with the Salisbury Beach Sand & Sea Festival.

This year the race will be on Saturday, June 26th 2010. The event will start promptly at 6:00pm from Salisbury Beach Center – in front of the SurfSide5 restaurant.

The race is open to anyone, and you are encouraged to pre-register!

The 3/4-mile Children’s Fun Run will kick off from the SurfSide5 at approximately 5:45 pm.

Registration for both events will begin at 5pm at the Information Kiosk in Salisbury Center. The registration fee is $15.00 and includes a T-Shirt.

Proceeds frm the race benefit local charity as well as equipment and training for the Salisbury Beach Lifeguards.

If you ever wanted to kayak and explore the waters around Plum Island looking for horseshoe crabs, check out the five-hour kayaking adventure being offered by Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport on Sunday and Monday, May 30th and 31st.

Go for a kayaking excursion in the calm waters around Plum Island to secluded areas where horseshoe crabs are visible during the springtime mating season.

This event is co-sponsored by Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport.

Choose one of two sessions.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.
