The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is conducting its Annual Refuge Beach Cleanup on Saturday, March 27th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Join them and help clean up this beautiful beach!

You bring the gloves, and they”ll supply the trash bags.

The annual Cape Ann Home & Garden Show, sponsored by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 27th and 28th at the Gloucester High School Field House.

The Show is designed to provide help for homeowners in all stages of remodeling, landscaping, and decorating their homes. The two-day event showcases the many fine businesses on Cape Ann and the North Shore that cater to the needs of homeowners and garden enthusiasts.

This year’s Show is full of surprises with more community involvement, more garden, a new layout, and several interesting speakers. Patrick Parent, from Paul Parent Enterprises, will speak on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and David Epstein, from Growing Wisdom, returns for a fourth year on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

Show hours on Saturday and Sunday are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Morning Birding In Boxford and Ipswich, Brookline Bird Club, Saturday, April 3rd

The Brookline Bird Club will be morning birding in in Boxford and Ipswich. They will circle Crooked Pond and then carpool to the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, focusing on woodpeckers and listening for their distinct drumming and calls.

These trips are open to all and are free.

If you’d like to go with them, meet them at Crooked Pond, Boxford at 7:30 am.

If you want to go birding in Ipswich and/or enjoy the scenic beauty of coastal Ipswich, Massachusetts, join Sue McGrath of Newburyport Birders on an exploration of the scenic Great and Little Necks sections of Ipswich.

You’ll learn to identify birds, and Sue will discuss the birds that are encountered by the group. Some of the ares that will be explored and scanned for birds include Eagle Hill River, Clark Pond and Plum Island Sound.

This is a great way to get familiar with these areas of Ipswich if you aren’t familiar with them.

From Snowy to Saw Whet Owls: Our Overwintering Guests, Castle Hill On Crane Estate, Ipswich, Thursday, March 25th

The Trustees of Reservations invites you to Castle Hill and the Crane Estate for the presentation, “From Snowy to Saw Whet Owls: Our Overwintering Guests” by Norman Smith on Thursday, March 25th.

Since 1981, Norman Smith has spent countless days and nights, in every imaginable weather condition, observing, capturing, banding and color-marking Snowy Owls at Logan International Airport.

Most recently, satellite transmitters have been attached to owls to learn more about their movements. Find out what has been learned to date, what questions remain and how this project developed to include research on Saw-whet Owls.

About Norman Smiith

Norman Smith is a self-taught naturalist who has worked for Massachusetts Audubon Society since 1974. His current position is Director of Blue Hills Trailside Museum and Norman Smith Environmental Education Center in Milton. Norman has studied birds of prey for more than 35 years, including rehabilitating the injured and successfully fostering more than 1,000 orphaned hawk and owl chicks into adoptive nests.

His ongoing long-term projects include trapping and banding migrating hawks and owls in the Blue Hills Reservation, banding nestling hawks and owls, and doing research on snowy owls and other raptors wintering at Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center is offering “Investigate, Create & Learn: In Search Of Seals,” an after-school program for children ages 6 to 9 to learn about local wildlife.  On Wednesday, March 24th, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m, Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings invites children age 6 to 9 to learn about and search for seals.

Book Sale Donations For Great Old Book Sale at Newburyport Public Library

March 27 – March 31

The Friends Friends of the Newburyport Public Library will be accepting book donations for the Great Old Book Sale starting on Saturday, March 27th through Wednesday, March 31st at the Newburyport Public Library.

The Great Old Book Sale starts with a “Members Preview Night” on Wednesday, March 31st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The sale will run from Thursday, April 1st through Saturday, April 3rd.

All items should be clean and in good condition. Materials that will be accepted include the following:

  • paperback and hardcover books
  • audiotapes
  • videotapes
  • DVDs
  • music CDs
  • record albums
  •  fine periodicals.

Note: No text books or encyclopedias please.

Donations may be dropped off in the Program Room during regular Library hours, and will be accepted until Wednesday, March 31st at 12:00 noon. To arrange donation pick up, please contact Friends President, Amantha Moore at 978-462-8059.

Proceeds from the Great Old Book Sale benefit the Library’s collections and programs. Volunteers are welcome!

The Newburyport Public Library is offering Paper Pendant Craft for Teens at the library Wednesday, March 24th, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to recycle with style in the Children’s Activity Room. Participants will make pendants that look like glass but are made out of paper and a special glaze. Snacks will be provided. To register, please call 978.465.4428 ext. 226 or visit the Information Desk.
