Greater Newburyport High School Hockey, Wednesday, February 3rd

February 3, 2010

Hockey, basketball and wrestling are on this evening’s schedule for the local high school teams.

HOCKEY:

  • Newburyport at Lynnfield, 8:15 p.m. (O’Keefe Rink, Peabody)

Newburyport ‘s 2-1 win over a strong Masconomet team at the Graf Rink  last Saturday evening was perhaps the best game of the year played by the Clippers. Sitting in 2nd place with a 5-point lead over Masconomet, Newburyport (11-3-1) travela to McVann-Louis O’Keefe Memorial Rink, Peabody to face off against the Lynnfield Pioners (6-6-2). The Clippers won the first game against the Pioneers, 3-0, but it’s always tough beating Lynnfield in their home rink.

  • Wilmington at Amesbury, 7:00 p.m. (Graf Rink, Newburyport)

Not an enviable task for Amesbury tonight.  The Amesbury Indians (1-11-2) take on the undefeated and highly ranked Wilmington Wildcats (14-0) at the Graf Rink. Wilmington, in 1st place in the Cape Ann League,  has size, speed, and discipline. Perhaps they will take Amesbury lightly as the Wildcats look forward to Saturday’s game in Wilmington against Newburyport, but looking at Wilmington’s record so far this season, don’t count on it!

BOYS BASKETBALL:

  • Masconomet at Amesbury, 7:00 pm

Amesbury (1-15) will have their hands full tonight against the high powered Masconomet Chieftains (13-1).

  • North Andover at Triton, 7:00 p.m.

Triton (4-10) is also in for a tough battle tonight against the North Andover Scarlet Knights (14-1).

  • Wilmington at Pentucket, 7:00 p.m.

Pentucket (6-9) is facing a tough Wilmington (10-6). Pentucket has to pull all the stops out with its remaining games if it hopes to qualify for the state tournament.

  • Georgetown at North Reading, 6:30 p.m.

Should be a good game between two evenly matched teams. Georgetown (10-6) and North Reading (9-6) both look to be tournament bound.

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

  • Amesbury at Masconomet, 7:00 p.m.

Maasconomet (11-5) has too much for Amesbury (3-11) this evening.

  • Triton at North Andover, 7:00 p.m.

Triton (7-9) needs to win its remaining games to qualify for the state tournament. A win against North Andover (10-4) would be a good start.

  • Pentucket at Wilmington, 7:00 p.m.

The game of the evening for high school basketball. Pentucket (18-0) is the Cape Ann powerhouse and is facing a Wilmington (9-6) team that had been expected to challenge them for the top position when the season began.

  • North Reading at Georgetown, 6:30 p.m.

Georgetown (2-12) is enduring a long season. The season continues with a game against North Reading (9-5).

WRESTLING:

  • Georgetown at Beverly, 7 p.m.
