Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley is holding training for volunteers seeking to be companions, shoppers or medical advocates to area elders.
The training is being offered on Wednesday, November 4th, at 1:00 p.m. at its offices at 360 Merrimack St., Building 5, Lawrence.
Medical advocates accompany and assist elders during medical appointments.
All volunteers receive training and mileage reimbursement.
Flexible schedules and ongoing support are available.

Great Old Book Sale at the Newburyport Public Library
Looking for some used books and videos? Check out the Great Old Book Sale at the Newburyport Public Library that is currently going on through Saturday, October 31st.
Twice a year, in the spring and fall, the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library hold a fund raising book sale. This event takes place in the Library Program Room and provides a wonderful opportunity for the public to recycle gently used books and to purchase items at bargain prices.
A wide selection of books, periodicals, audio materials, and videos are available. Many volunteers are needed to assist with the sale.
Proceeds from the Great Old Book Sale benefit the Newburyport Public Library’s collections and programs.
This year’s spring book sale is being held from Thursday, October 29th through Saturday, October 31st.
The hours for the book sale are as follows:
- Thursday, October 29th – 9:00 am to 8:30 pm (Extended Hours)
- Friday, October 30th- 9:00 am to 6:30 pm
- Saturday, October 31st – 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (The final DISCOUNT Day!)

Newburyport High School Girls Youth Basketball Clinic, November 14th through January 31st

The Newburyport High School Girls Youth Basketball Clinic will be held in the school gymnasium on Saturdays from November 14th through January 31st.
Girls in grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to learn and practice the fundamental skills of basketball.
Clinic Schedule:
- Grades 3, 4 and 5 will practice from 8:00 am to 9:30 am.
- Grades 6, 7 and 8 will practice from 9:30 am to 11:00 am each Saturday
Varsity players will assist the high school coaches with instruction and demonstration.

Those Little Brown Things: A Sparrow Workshop
You see them everywhere…sparrows! Probably one of the most ubiquitous species of birds that many of us see on a day-to-day basis. On our lawns and in our backyards. Around our homes. In our bushes. They seem to be everywhere!
But can you identify the many different types of sparrows that frequent our area?
Take on one of the birding world’s greatest challenges – sparrow identification – through a workshop and field trip being offered this Saturday, October 31st at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center.
The workshop is being led by Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and Alison O’Hare, a Birders Certificate Program graduate.

Amesbury Soccer Association Seeks Members For Board Positions And Other Committees

The Amesbury Soccer Association (ASA) has several openings on their board and on other committees. The ASA Board is responsible for running the summer recreational and competitive travel soccer programs.
Open positions include the following:
- assisting in fundraising
- team organization
- coach development
- program structure and operation
- public relations.
Meetings are held once a month during the soccer seasons.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.
During the spring and summer, the center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.
You can expect to see a large number of shorebirds, egrets and herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. When appropriate, the itinerary will be adjusted to search for rarities reported in the area.
To participate in the birding field trip, meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.
