Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island is offering a free, one hour program, Tide Pool Explorers, during the week of August 24th through 28th.
Dates and Times:
- Monday, August 24th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 am
- Tuesday, August 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 am
- Wednesday, August 26th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm (noon)
- Thursday, August 27th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm (noon)
- Friday, August 28th, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Join Sandy Point’s naturalist for an exploration of the expansive tide pools that are found on this portion of Plum Island. During this program you’ll explore the wonders of the rocky intertidal zone and learn about the creatures who call this dynamic environment home.

16th Annual Essex Music Festival, Saturday, August 29th

The 16th Annual Essex Music Festivalin Essex, MA features a collection of the area’s finest acoustic performers in a family offered venue. An eclectic mix of genres will be performing on two stages and will include Folk, Bluegrass, Cajun/Zydeco, Blues, Celtic, Ragtime and American music.
Expect some surprises at the new downtown location. Dana King has taken over the reigns from Sweet Loretta after her 15 wonderful years and Dana’s band, “Old Cold Tater”, will now be hosting the event.
Net proceeds go to the restoration of Centennial Grove.

New England Patriots Long Snapper Surfs And Enjoys The Waves Of Hurricane Bill Off Hampton Beach

Hurricane Bill’s journey up the eastern coast of the United States was a godsend for the local surfing community as they got the opprotunity to enjoy big surf!
An article by Jeff Howe on the NESN website reports that New England Patriots rookie long snapper, Jake Ingram, enjoyed the weekend surfing in the waters off the New Hampshire seacoast and enjoying the large swells generated by Hurricane Bill off the beaches of Hampton and North Hampton.
Ingram, a Hawaiian and avid surfer, attended the University of Hawaii, and grew up in Oahu, HI.

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.
During the spring and summer, the center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.
You can expect to see a large number of shorebirds, egrets and herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. When appropriate, the itinerary will be adjusted to search for rarities reported in the area.
To participate in the birding field trip, meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.

Ocean Waters Off New England Much Warmer Than Normal This Year

If you’ve been swimming, body surfing or surfing recently in the waters off our beaches, such as at Crane Beach, Ipswich; North Beach, North Hampton, NH; Hampton Beach, Hampton, NH; Good Harbor Beach on Cape Ann; or Salisbury Beach, and thought that the water has been much warmer and more comfortable than normal, you are correct!
An article by Richard Gaines in the Gloucester Daily Times earlier this week reported that ocean surface water temperatures around the world, as well as locally in the Gulf of Maine, are indeed much warmer than normal according to statistics and data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
July 2009 Ocean Surface Temperature Highest Recorded Since NOAA Began Keeping Records
NOAA’s analysis of ocean surface temperatures for July 2009, concluded that the ocean surface temperature in July was the highest ever recorded during that month, going back to when NOAA began keeping records in 1880.
River Rivals Field Hockey Program Seeking New Coordinator And Parent Volunteers

The River RIvals Field Hockey program was started in 2003 to introduce girls in the local communities to the sport of field hockey. The program will not continue without the assistance of a new coordinator.
