The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

During the spring and summer, the center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.

You can expect to see a large number of shorebirds, egrets and herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. When appropriate, the itinerary will be adjusted to search for rarities reported in the area.

To participate in the birding field trip, meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.

Essex County Youth Rugby Sign-Up and Registration, West Newbury, Thursday, September 3rd

Where: West Newbury Town Hall, 491 Main Street, Rt. 113, West Newbury, MA

The Essex County Youth Rugby Football Club will have sign-ups for children between the ages of 6-14 on Thursday, September 3rd at the West Newbury Town Hall from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

The teams will be split into three age groups – ages 6-8, 9-11, and 12-14.

Cost: The cost is $70 per player.

Practices:

Practices begin on Friday, September 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and Sundays, 3:00 to 5:00 pm, until the first week of November at Pipestave Hill in West Newbury.

If you’ve ever wanted to see and/or learn more about the ecology of the lower Merrimack River ecosystem, here is your chance!

Lisa Hutchings of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center and the crew of Harbor Tour’s Yankee Clipperwill host this exploratory cruise of the ecosystem of the lower Merrimack River that runs through Newburyport, Amesbury and Salisbury.

The tour is being offered on Sunday, August 30th, from 8:45 am to 10:45 am

On Sunday, August 30th, Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, and Plum Island Kayak,  Newburyport, are offering an all day kayaking trip to the Isles of Shoals for experienced kayakers.

The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 10 miles off the New Hampshire/Maine coast. It is a great area to explore by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the wildlife on and around these Isles from your kayak.

The all day trip, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, includes a shuttle out to the Isles of Shoals from Newburyport, and on-deck barbecue lunch.

The Verde Valley in north central Arizona is a birder’s paradise that is still a well-kept secret. The mild, four-season climate attracts nearly a third of the 900 species of birds in the United States and Canada-from the miniature hummingbird to broad-winged raptors

Arizona’s Verde Valley, encompassing the communities of Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cornville, Cottonwood, Page Springs, Jerome and Sedona, offers abundant year-round birding opportunities along rivers, in the desert, and among gorgeous cliffs, buttes, and mesas.  

On Wednesday, September 9th, at 7:30 p.m., recent visitor Ann Gurka will present a slide program and lecture about the area’s fascinating birdlife at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center.

The program is open to the public, appropriate for all ages, and free to Mass Audubon’s members; non-members are asked to pay an admission fee of $4.
