Maudslay State Park Flower Walks, Newburyport, May 23rd

This is a great time of year to explore Maudslay State Park, Newburyport.

The former Moseley family estate on the Merrimack River, this park features 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pines, and one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts. Most breathtaking are the ornamental trees and masses of azaleas and rhododendrons that bloom in May and June. Its an exquisite place for walking, biking, horseback riding and informal picnics.

This weekend, you can take guided walks and/or horse-drawn hayrides through the blooms in the park. With excellent weather in the forecast, this is a perfect time to explore this wonderful park on the banks of the Merrimack River and see and smell its floral treasures.

Summer Instructional Weight Training Clinic, Nock Middle School, Newburyport, June 29th to August 7th

Newburyport Youth Services and Jay Murphy, Proven Results Conditioning, will be offering an instructional weight training clinic for boys and girls in grades six through eight at the Rupert Nock Middle School, Newburyport.

The clinic is for beginners and/or those with weight training  experience, and will be held in the Nock School gymnasium from 8:15 am to 9:30 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from June 29th to August 7th.

Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee Sponsored Hikes

You are welcome to join the Wednesday morning hikes that are sponsored by the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee.

An informal group meets at the Town Landing on East Street, Ipswich at 9:30 am on each Wednesday from mid September to mid June. All are welcome.

The morning hikes explore the woods and trails in and about Ipswich. There are eleven miles of marked trails in Ipswich, Massachusetts, including a portion of the Bay Circuit Trail. These trails are maintained by members of the Ipswich Bay Circuit Trail Committee (IBCTC) with other volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations in Ipswich.

Wednesday Morning Birding, Joppa Flats Education Center, Newburyport, May 20th

Cost: $12 for Mass Audubon members; $15 for nonmembers

The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and Dave Weaver, Birder’s Certificate Program graduate, for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.

During the spring and summer, the center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.

You can expect to see a large number of shorebirds, egrets and herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. When appropriate, the itinerary will be adjusted to search for rarities reported in the area.

To participate in the birding field trip, meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.

9th Annual Trav’s Trail Run, Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, May 24th

The ninth annual Trav’s Trail Run will be held on May 24th  at 10:30 a.m. in Maudslay State Park, Newburyport.

The race is a 3-mile cross country run or walk in memory of Travis Landeth, a 1994 Newburyport High grad and national class runner.

All race proceeds go directly to the Travis Landreth Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Deadline For 2009 Newburyport High School Wall of Fame Nominations Deadline, June 1st

Monday, June 1st is the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2009 Newburyport High School Wall of Fame.

Honorees shall be men or women who have made especially significant contributions to athletics. This includes, but is not limited to, coaches.

Honorees could be former players, coaches, teachers, administrators, members of the School Committee, or others who have demonstrated a special commitment to Newburyport High School athletics.
