May 15th Start Date For Delivery Of Newburyport’s New Recycling Carts
May 14, 2009
A City of Newburyport press release issued by Molly Ettenborough, the City of Newburyport’s Recycling Coordinator, states that beginning on May 15th the free, 64-gallon recycling carts will start to be delivered to residents in Newburyport and will be delivered to all residents by June 15th.
If you don’t want one of these carts, please call 978-499-0413 and leave your name, address, and phone number and you will be added to the “Do Not Want” list. Those that have called stating that they do not want one, will have their carts picked up within one or two days after delivery.
Recycling Cart Usage
You can begin using the recycling carts immediately upon delivery. The carts are to be placed curbside on your regularly scheduled recycling day.
The carts should be placed curbside, to the right of the driveway if applicable, with the cart’s lid opening facing the street. Each cart has attached wheels to make moving them easier and an attached lid to contain recyclable and provide for a cleaner process.
The carts will be maintained by Mello Disposal and will be assigned to a specific address using a bar code system. The carts are for recyclable material only. Use of the carts for anything other than the collection of recyclables is prohibited.
Residents moving from the city must leave them at that address for the next resident.
Recycling Is Mandatory in Newburyport
Recycling is mandatory for all Newburyport residents and businesses that receive municipal trash and recycling services. It is mandatory to recycle paper, glass, metal and plastic containers.
What Can’t Be Placed In The Trash
Do not put the following items in the trash:
- Recyclable materials – glass, metal, plastic containers, paper, cardboard
- Leaf and yard waste
- asphalt, pavement, brick, concrete, and construction debris
- car batteries
- white goods (large appliances) and metals
- cathode ray tubes (TVs and computer monitors)
- tires
If these items are found in your trash, they will be tagged with a “Rejection” sticker and left at your curb. Continuous violations of these regulations will result in an initial fine of $50.
Follow These Rules When Recycling
- All recyclable materials can be put in the new recycling cart that you receive. You can also continue to use the blue recycling bins. If you no longer want your blue bin, you can bring it to the recycling center for reuse or to be recycled.’
- Cardboard should be flattened, bundled or tied and placed next to your recycling bin or ir can be placed in the cart. Note: Waxed cardboard is not accepted.
- All materials – cardboard, paper, glass, metal and plastic containers – may be put together in the cart.
- Newburyport is now accepting all plastic containers, 1-7, for recycling. Only plastic bags and styrofoam cannot be recycled.
According to Molly Ettenborough, Newburyport’s Recycling Coordinator, “Newburyport receives rebate money for all of the recyclable material we generate. Recycling these items is a great way to strengthen our tax dollars and reduce our trash which we now pay for through a separate disposal tipping fee.”
