If you want to learn about the ice harvesting industry and the important role it played in New England and Essex, MA, make plans to attend this fascinating presentation on Tuesday, April 14th at 7:30 pm.
Ed Howard will present a charming DVD taken from an old 33 minute movie on New England ice harvesting, Ice Harvesting Sampler, from the Northeast Historic Film collection. Some of their films will be available for sale at the program, with a portion of the sales being donated to the museum.
More Money Made From Ice Than Shipbuilding At One Point In TIme
Using this introduction, Jim Witham will discuss the ice harvesting industry on Chebacco Lake in Essex. At one point in the late 1800′s, ice cutting in Essex was actually a more financially significant industry than shipbuilding. Jim will relate how the railroad in Essex was in reality built to haul ice out of town rather than to haul lumber into town!
Dave Brown will show some of the ice industry tools from the museum’s collection and talk on how they were used.
How To Purchase Tickets
Make plans to attend now. Tickets are $6 for members and $8 for non-members.
You can purchase tickets by phone by calling (978) 768-7541 or you can purchase them online at the museum’s website.
