Newburyport Birders: Woodcock Watching With A Friend, April 3rd and 5th

Newburyport Birders is offering an opportunity listen to and observe the American Woodcock in nearby fields in early April. 

The American Woodcock’s “PEENT” is one of the most magical, evening sounds of spring, and American Woodcocks engage in one of the most demonstrative and unusual courtships. Males of this cryptic, secretive shorebird species perform an impressive, aerial display flight at dusk.

On Friday, Friday, April 3rd, and Sunday, April 5th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, you’ll learn about the natural history of these birds, and then walk to nearby fields to watch and listen to this remarkable display.

Participants will also search for early spring migrants. Bring your sense of wonder and binoculars; be prepared to walk on unpaved, possibly wet and uneven terrain.

Registration: The fee for two participants is $20. There is limited enrollment, so register early. Call 978-462-4785 or send an email to newburyportbirders@comcast.net.
