Young Canadian Harp Seal Visits Backyard of Seabrook Beach Home

March 2, 2009

On Friday, February 27th, a team from the New England Aquarium helped relocate a young Canadian Harp seal that had managed to meander across more than 200 yards of sand dunes at Seabrook Beach, Seabrook, NH where it was found resting in the backyard of an Atlantic Avenue, Seabrook Beach  homeowner.

The young juvenile seal, estimated to weigh between 80 and 90 pounds and in good health, was taken to New Castle, N.H., and returned to the water. The normal habitat for the harp seal is in the Canadian maritime provinces. The juveniles migrate farther south in an effort to find food, rather than compete with the adults farther north.

Here is a video (courtesy of NECN) of the harp seal stranding/relocation that was shown on NECN (New England Cable News) in Boston.
