The Mass Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats Education Center offers a Wednesday Morning Birding program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has time available during the week, join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and Dave Weaver, Birder’s Certificate Program graduate, for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It’s a great way to observe birds in the area and identify some of the better locations for finding them when on your own.
During the spring and summer, the center conducts its field trips to birding hot spots in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. The focus for its programs will be the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), the Merrimack River estuary, Cape Ann, and other productive areas in Essex County.
You can expect to see a large number of shorebirds, egrets and herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. When appropriate, the itinerary will be adjusted to search for rarities reported in the area.
To participate in the birding field trip, meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.
Newburyport-bound Barge and Tug in Close Call Off Cape Ann
March 31, 2009
The tug boat and barge had left Boston about 11:30 p.m. Friday, to deliver a crane to Newburyport where it was needed for an emergency bridge repair job ( the Derek Hines Bridge, Amesbury).
An article by Richard Gaines in the Gloucester Daily Times reports that the 130-ft. long, 30-ft. wide barge being pushed by a tug boat for C. White Marine Inc. had a close call with two 40-ft. long commercial fishing boats, the Ocean Reporter and the Terminator, that were trawling for haddock in the foggy inshore waters off Thacher Island.
As the tug and barge navigated through the foggy waters it came close, too close for comfort say the fishermen, to a group of approximately 20 commercial fishing day boats that were trawling for haddock in the waters near Thacher Island.
The potential collision was eerily similar to what many Gloucester fishermen believed happened to the Patriot, a Gloucester commercial fishing “day boat” that sank about 15 miles to the southwest on Middle Bank on January 3, 2009 with the loss of two men.
