Where: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is offering a free one-hour program for preschoolers, Furry Friends, at its Visitor Center on Thursday, February 26th, and Friday, February 27th.  The program is offered at the following times:

  • Thursday, February 26th: 10:30-11:30 am and 1:00-2:00 pm
  • Friday, February 27th, 10:30-11:30 am and 1:00-2:00 pm

The program, which is for children ages 3-5, will introduce your preschooler to the wonders of our furry mammal friends, through stories, songs, and finger-plays in this hands-on interactive program!

The Furry Friends Program includes both indoor and outdoor activities so dress for the weather. Meet at the Refuge Visitor Center.

Newburyport To Play Bishop Fenwick in 1st Round of Div. 2 Tournament

The Newburyport Clippers high school hockey team (13-4-4) starts its play in the Eastern Massachusetts Division Two State Tournament at Salem State College on Tuesday, February 24th at 7:30 pm with a game against Bishop Fenwick High School (12-5-3) of Peabody, MA.

The Clippers are the Number 8 seed in Division 2 and Bishop Fenwick is the Number 9 seed. A total of 14 teams are seeded in the Division Two bracket.

The winner of tonight’s game will face Winthrop (16-1-3), the Number One seed, on Friday, February 27th at 7:45 pm at Salem State College.

Birding On The Ides Of March. Join Newburyport Birders at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, March 15, 2009, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, and search for lingering winter birds and early arriving, spring migrants.

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places to look for birds in the country. Birds on this Refuge are abundant and offer excellent observation opportunities.

Birders will learn aids needed to begin bird identification: special characteristics, bird behavior and habitat preference.

Pilgrimage To Khasi Hills of India, First Religious Society UU, Newburyport, March 1

“Pilgrimage to the Khasi Hills.”

On Sunday March 1st, at 10:30 a.m, the topic of Reverend Harold Babcock’s Sunday Service sermon at the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church will be his recent visit to the Khasi Hills of India, where he and his wife attended the annual convention of the Unitarian Union of North Eastern India.

Reverend Babcock will relate some of the history of Unitarianism in India, its beliefs and practices, and its current situation. He looks forward to sharing a bit of this “pilgrimage to the Khasi Hills” with you.

Cost: $12 per person, $10 for children and senior citizens.

The East Parish United Methodist Church in Salisbury will hold an Irish Dinner from 6:00 to 8 pm on Saturday, March 7th.

The Irish Dinner features the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner, but also offers chicken dinners upon request. The evening will will also featureIrish music with Damien Corcoran.

Tickets for the event are $12 per person, $10 for children and senior citizens.

Are you one of the victims of the current recession and are looking for a job? Are you interested in working as a police officer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts?

If you are, then you should sign up to take the entry-level police officer/state trooper examination being held on Saturday, April 25 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources division.

The examination is for police officer, cities and towns, transit police officer, MBTA and state trooper, Mass. Department of State Police.

Newburyport Bank Classic Wrap-Up, Friday, February 20th

Newburyport Five Cents Savings BankThe 14th Annual Newburyport Bank Ice Hockey Classic, sponsored by the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, concluded on Friday evening at the Graf Rink in Newburyport with the Bresnahan Division consolation and championship games.

Pentucket was the only local River Rivals team to make it into a championship game in the tournament. They lost to Shawsheen Tech, 5-3, in the Gulazian Division championship game.

Consolation Game: Newburyport Beats Danvers, 6-0

Newburyport (13-4-4) got back on its winning ways after a three game mini-slump (one tie; two losses) with a 6-0 win over Danvers. Newburyport scored two goals in each period as they capitalized on scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Junior Kyle McElroy had a hat trick and Senior Kevin Holmes finished up his regular season career with 102 points, a nice achievement for the senior and co-captain of the team. He came into the game with 99 points and picked up three assists in the game.

Newburyport is tournament bound and is currently waiting to see where they get seeded in the state tournament. The tournament pairings will be announced/released on Saturday, February 21st.

Newburyport Birders is offering Bald Eagle Adventures on the Lower Merrimack River
from February 15th through the 22nd. You can arrange a small, private tour with your family and friends.

The Bald Eagle is one of our national symbols. Each winter Bald Eagles from northern New England move south to the lower Merrimack River which provides perfect, winter habitat for these majestic birds. These spectacular birds soar high over the water and then stoop to secure prey with their sharp talons.

Newburyport Birders has tours planned during the week and on weekends, from February 15th through the 22nd, to meet everyone’s needs. These limited enrollment programs are very popular. Morning and afternoon outings are available.
