Plum Island Beach Erosion Continues As Winter Approaches

October 31, 2008

Plum IslandDan Atkinson’s article in the Daily News of Newburyport (Friday, October 31, 2008) reports that beach erosion in some areas of Plum Island worsened over the past few days due to a combination of high tides associated with the new moon and high winds associated with a storm that recently passed through the area.

The ocean-facing side of Plum Island has been under attack during the past few years in the areas near the center of the Island at Plum Island Beach, where Northern and Southern Boulevards intersect, and more recently approximately one mile to the north of the center.

Island residents are concerned about the severity of the ongoing beach erosion and wary of the coming approach of winter. Winter storms, such as a Nor’easter, focus much more powerful waves and corresponding wave energy onto the beaches of the Island.

One Home Ruled Uninhabitable

According to Mr. Atkinson’s article one home located at 18 Northern Boulevard has been ruled uninhabitable by the Town of Newbury’s Assistant Building Inspector due to sand being sucked away from the home’s foundation by the oncoming waters.

Town Officials Awaiting Formal Approval of Funding For Sandbag Deployment

Meanwhile the Town of Newbury, which has all of the required permits for deploying large sandbags , is waiting for formal funding approval from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) of the installation and purchase of these giant sandbags. The funding for this effort is being reallocated from funding that was initially obligated for the construction of a small structure at the beach that would be used primarily by the Town for its lifeguards and storage of beach related equipment, etc,. Another cause of the delay is the requirement by the DCR that Island residents clear material from the beach and their properties that could come loose, obstruct and/or damage the sand bags.

Daily commuters who use the unattended/unstaffed Newburyport and Rowley lots will have to make sure that they have $4.00 in cash for parking with them everyday. To make matters worse, these lots have no change machines. A major inconvenience for users of these parking lots!

And the functional operation of the brick building that was supposedly going to be used to sell commuter rail tickets, coffee, papers, etc, has been an utter disaster.  Many users of the Newburyport commuter rail lot wonder if it will ever open for business again?
