Here is the schedule of Yankee Homecoming events for Wednesday, July 30th:
8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: TAI CHI WITH PAUL MAHONEY
Waterfront Park. Admission: Free!
10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon HISTORICAL TOUR by RALPH AYERS
Leaves from Information Booth, Waterfront Park
Admission: Free.
A 2-hour narrated tour of Newburyport, Newbury, and Plum Island, pointing out our homes, parks, and history, including famous forefathers of this historic area.
The tour is hosted by Ralph Ayers, a native Newburyporter, and a 50 year volunteer of the celebration. His stories are true, with some humorous fibs added for your entertainment.
The van has limited capacity. Call 978-465-9363 for reservations for parties of 6 or more, otherwise first come-first served.
Donations gratefully accepted. All donations support Yankee Homecoming.
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM CUSHING HOUSE MUSEUM SILHOUETTES
Cushing House, 98 High Street
Cost per silhouette: $29.00. Duplicate copy: $10.00
Silhouette Artist, Carol Lebeaux , will once again do hand-cut silhouettes. For more information and silhouette reservations call 978-462-2681.
10:00 AM – 2:00 PM ANNUAL KIDS DAY IN THE PARK
Atkinson Common Park, Storey Avenue
Admission: Free.
Kids Day in the Park activities include decorated bicycle and doll carriage parades. The parade will be from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Children’s activities include children’s games, music, face painting, and much more. Food will be available.
10:30AM – 3:30PM NURSING HOME CONCERTS
Admission: Free. Open to the public.
This heartwarming event will allow you to visit with friends and family at our community’s nursing homes. The public is encouraged to come, sing along, and enjoy Dick Kaplan and his Excellent Jazz Band for this free “Concert On The Road” as they travel to:
- 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM, Country Manor, 180 Low Street
- 12 Noon – 1:00 PM, Opportunity Works, 10 Opportunity Way (Industrial Park)
- 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM, Port Rehabilitation Center, 4 Hale Street

From the crypt of Rev. Whitfield to the bell cast by Paul Revere, visit the Whispering Gallows or the slave pews on your tour of one of the oldest New England Churches.

The first exhibit features the intertwined visions of Ms. Sydney and Mr. Thompson. The second exhibit deals with art created through the use of mono prints, gelatin plating, etching, etc.

2:00PM – 3:30PM YANKEE HOMECOMING’S HISTORIC CEMETERY TOURS

Encounter old and new friends during a fascinating and hauntingly informative wander through Newburyport’s Oak Hill Cemetery. Those souls taking the tour should meet at the main gate near end of Brown and Greenleaf Streets before 3:00 PM.
4:00PM – 6:00PM SENIOR CORONATION
Atria Merrimack Place, 85 Storey Avenue
Admission: $10.00
Yankee Homecoming will crown its Senior King, Joseph Meekins, and Queen, Claire Nicolosi, for 2008 today at Atria Merrimack Place. Awarded to two people who have given of themselves freely for the benefit of the community and others. Come help celebrate! Dinner and music will be provided.
4:30 PM – 7:00 PM ELK’S PASTA DINNER
Elks Lodge, 25 Low Street
Admission: Adults $7.00, children under 12 $4.00
“Mama Mia”, Think of all the fun and food. This is a colossal Italian spread. Mangia baby! All proceeds to benefit Elks Charities.
6:00PM – 9:00PM Newburyport Brewfest 2008
Newburyport Central Waterfront, behind the Custom House Maritime Museum, 25 Water Street, NRA East Parking Lot

The Brewfest is BACK! Sample more than 30 craft beers from some of the finest brewers in the country, under our tent, rain or shine, and hear EJ Oulette & Crazy Maggy. Food will be available from The Grog and David’s Tavern.

Angela West & Showdown is one of New England’s great country bands. The band features Angela West who was Massachusetts Country Music Awards Association’s “2007 Entertainer of the Year”. The rest of the band is: Ducky Belliveau – steel guitar/lead guitar/vocals, Kevin T. Norris – bass/lead vocals, and David Bickel – drums.
